Capital & Diversity: “Do You Know Your Number?” The industry remains largely stagnant, with only 1.4% of all institutional capital being managed by diverse leaders, according to the Knight Foundation's 2021 report. Despite this, the foundation highlights that "returns from firms owned by women and individuals of color are at least on par with their less diverse counterparts, while their assets under management (AUM) are smaller... creating missed opportunities for investors to achieve outperformance." For asset owners looking to drive meaningful impact by investing with diverse and emerging managers, the key challenge is the lack of infrastructure to measure and track these investments. Currently, no single standardized method exists across the industry, causing friction for managers, consultants, and asset owners alike.
