Innovations in error correction have the potential to unlock greater value for quantum customers, enabling more reliable and scalable quantum computing. In collaboration with Gilles Zémor of Université de Bordeaux, IonQ’s quantum error correction team has introduced a new approach to error-corrected quantum memory — drawing inspiration from classical flash memory. 💡 What’s new? This approach, called stacked quantum memory, pairs quantum Gabidulin codes — a type of error-correcting code — with classical memory techniques aiming to enhance scalability while reducing error correction overhead. 🎯 Why does it matter? Classical flash memory uses multi-level cells that store multiple bits per cell, improving information density and reducing manufacturing costs. However, these cells require robust error correction to mitigate readout errors. IonQ's research explores how stacking quantum memory cells and leveraging structured error-correcting codes can improve fault tolerance and optimize quantum storage. Exploring and applying these principles is just one of the ways that IonQ is working toward more scalable, fault-tolerant quantum architectures — bringing us closer to practical, large-scale quantum computing.
