Students in Iowa State's brewing science program had the opportunity to undertake a unique challenge this semester: take all the science they are learning and apply it by creating a new product for commercial production with Coralville's Backpocket Brewing. Trenton Major, senior in agricultural business, was part of the challenge-winning team that crafted the IPA, which they had named “Alien Juice Party." “The opportunity to create an IPA for Backpocket Brewing has been a great learning experience and challenge,” Major said. “The primary difference between home and commercial brewing is production scale, and throughout this process, we’ve been able to learn a lot about the considerations that come into play and the different equipment features that are utilized when brewing on a larger scale." Meet your fall 2024 student speaker, Christopher Meyer! Meyer, a graduating senior in agronomy and agricultural business, has been concurrently pursuing an MBA to bolster his business background. He has spent time learning about international agronomy in Ghana and more about local farming during several internships around the Midwest. "I was excited for the opportunity to go to Ghana, especially because my classes, my papers for the Global Youth Institute, and understanding of farming helped prepare me to learn more about agriculture abroad,” Meyer said. Listen to his story on Friday, Dec. 20. at 9 a.m. in Hilton Coliseum or via the livestream! Read more about Christopher ⬇️ #weareCALS #CALSProud #ISUCALS

Elizabeth Severson, graduating senior in agronomy and horticulture, has done a little bit of everything during her time at Iowa State. From placing first with the soil judging team to qualifying for nationals with the ISU Swim Club to playing the iconic Campanile during Prep Week, Severson's wide variety of involvement has given her perspective. “You don’t have to know exactly what you want to do right now,” Severson said. “I’ve really tried to keep an open mind in agronomy and have learned that you can do a lot of things within the major.” Severson is the fall 2024 recipient of the Outstanding Senior Award.
