The University of Michigan (U-M) is ending its two-decade partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) following national security concerns raised by the U.S. House Select Committee on Strategic Competition with China. Established in 2005, the UM-SJTU Joint Institute provided engineering degrees, dual programs, and study-abroad opportunities for over 1,000 students. President Santa J. Ono emphasized U-M’s commitment to international education while prioritizing national security. Current students can complete their degrees, but the decision marks a shift in U.S.-China academic collaborations.
