See you there! #ISF #Research #Collaboration #Innovation
About us
The International Sooting Flame (ISF) workshop aims at improving the understanding of the formation of carbon-based particles at technical conditions. The biennial workshop series provides a forum for open discussions and interaction between delegates. Specifically, the objectives of ISF are: -To identify common research priorities in the development and validation of accurate, predictive models of flames with soot and to coordinate research programs to address them. -To identify and coordinate well-defined target flames that are suitable for model development and validation, spanning a variety of flame types and fuels in each of the research programs. -To establish an archive of the detailed data sets of target flames with defined accuracy; and to provide a forum for the exchange and dissemination of these data.

The ISF Committee is pleased to announce the winners of the 2024 ISF-7 Workshop prizes, recognizing outstanding contributions from PhD students and early career researchers at our seventh workshop held in Milan on 20-21 July 2024. The prize winner for the best poster was Patrizia Crepaldi, Particle Technology Laboratory – ETH Zurich, for a poster entitled ‘Oxidation dynamics of soot (or carbon black) accounting for its core-shell structure and pore network’. Let's learn a bit more about Patrizia and her work in this post! Patrizia attended Politecnico di Milano for her undergraduate studies, where she moved the first steps towards modeling and simulation. Thereafter, she conducted her MSc studies (2020-2022) at ETH Zurich (Zurich, Switzerland) under the supervision of Prof. S.E. Pratsinis and Prof. Georgios A. Kelesidis and focused her research work on modeling of carbonaceous nanoparticles such soot and carbon black. Oxidation dynamic of carbonaceous nanoparticles is essential both to reduce soot emissions as well as to produce highly specific carbon black grades used in energy generation and storage. In Patrizia's ISF Poster, carbonaceous nanoparticles porosity during oxidation is elucidated using Lattice Monte Carlo simulations. That way, it was possible to describe from first principles the specific surface area evolution for the first time. Patrizia has now joined CRECK Modeling group under the guide of Prof. T. Faravelli where she will continue her work on carbonaceous nanoparticles. Join us in celebrating Patrizia's achievements and the promising future of her research! #ISF7 #research #innovation In the photo, Ms. Patrizia Crepaldi (center), winner of the ISF Best Poster Prize, along with Prof. Gus Nathan (left) and Prof. Georgios A. The ISF Committee is pleased to announce the winners of the 2024 ISF-7 Workshop prizes, recognizing outstanding contributions from PhD students and early career researchers at our seventh workshop held in Milan on 20-21 July 2024. The prize winners for the three-minute presentation competition were as follows: Andrea Nobili, CRECK Modeling – Politecnico di Milano, for a poster entitled ‘Towards an improved description of carbonaceous particle morphology’. Claudia-F. López Cámara, Ph.D., TU/e - EMPI – CENIDE, for a poster entitled ‘Graphene Origami : Evolution of the morphology of free-standing few-layer graphene in plasma synthesis’. Let's learn a bit more about Andrea and his work in this post! Andrea's work tackles the challenge of modeling key morphological features of carbonaceous particles through a discrete sectional model coupled with detailed gas-phase chemistry and fully written in the standardized CHEMKIN format. This enables the use of the model in the most common numerical frameworks for laminar flames and ideal reactors simulations. About Andrea: Andrea has recently completed his PhD at Politecnico di Milano (CRECK Modeling) and is set to embark on an exciting new chapter as a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University in Prof. Hai Wang’s lab. Join us in celebrating Andrea’s achievements and and the promising future of his research! #ISF7 #research #innovation

Andrea Nobili, CRECK Modeling – PoliMI, for a poster entitled ‘Towards an improved description of carbonaceous particle morphology’. Let's learn a bit more about Claudia and her work in this post! Claudia’s work demonstrates, for the first time, freestanding few-layer #graphene created via microwave #plasma synthesis develops from a single layer circular-shaped graphene to a crumpled and self-folded few-layer graphene. The findings reported align with previous numerical hypotheses and open new pathways to explore in the study of the #formation and #growth of this #nanomaterial. About Claudia: Dr. Claudia-F. López-Cámara is currently an assistant professor at the Thermo-Fluids Engineering (TFE) at TU Eindhoven. Her previous postdoctoral work on experimental studies of nanomaterial synthesis at the EMPI-Reactive flows (University of Duisburg-Essen, CENIDE - Center for Nanointegration Duisburg-Essen) inspired her to pursue her career pathway in this field. Her current investigations focus on nanomaterial synthesis for energy and sensor applications. Join us in celebrating Claudia’s achievements and the promising future of nanomaterial research! #ISF7 #nanotechnology #research #innovation
