Celebrating my sixth anniversary as ED of the EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative) today. Delighted to look back on all the progress we have made with the launch of an updated EITI Standard https://lnkd.in/gk_JcR-F, launch of the companies expectations assessment https://lnkd.in/gxP_CQhz, and refreshed strategic priorities https://lnkd.in/gef2n3hc, centred on domestic resource mobilisation, anti-corruption, and the energy transition. All this is made possible by a talented staff at the International Secretariat and a fully engaged multi-stakeholder Board chaired by Helen Clark, comprising 55 governments, more than 60 companies and several hundred CSOs. Looking ahead we will focus on transitioning to data driven approaches, communicating our impact, and demonstrating our relevance to policy making and for local communities.

🇦🇴 Last week, the members of ITIE Angola unanimously approved the 2nd Report of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI-Angola), reaffirming #Angola’s strong commitment to #transparency and sound management of its natural resources. 🤝 The 5th Extraordinary Meeting of the National Coordination Committee of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, chaired by the Secretary of State for Petroleum and Gas, José Alexandre Barroso, on behalf of Minister Diamantino Azevedo, Chairman of EITI Angola CNC, focused on the approval of this crucial report. The meeting brought together government bodies, representatives of the extractive industry, and civil society, marking a significant step towards enhancing transparency and ensuring responsible governance of Angola's mineral and hydrocarbon resources. 🌐 Angola’s participation in the EITI underscores the nation’s dedication to promoting transparency in the management of its natural resources. The release of this 2nd EITI Report is a key milestone in aligning Angola’s practices with international standards, fostering a more transparent and accountable business environment in strategic sectors like #mining.

🌍 Last week, EITI's Gisela Granado joined the first in-person meeting of the Africa Beneficial Ownership Network (AfBOT) and participated in a panel discussion with The World Bank Governance Unit and Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to discuss how we measure evidence and learning on beneficial ownership reform. The AfBOT Network is a member-led initiative — convened by the African Development Bank Group Bank and the UK Government, with support from Open Ownership — that brings together governments and international partners to accelerate the implementation and effective use of beneficial ownership registers across #Africa.    At the event, the director of the Seychelles Financial Intelligence Unit, Mr. Richard J. Rampal, in his remarks, credited the #EITIStandard for the country's decision to make their #beneficialownership register public.

🌍 Today marks the final day of our Anglophone and Lusophone Africa peer-learning dialogue! Over the past three days, more than 60 stakeholders from the region gathered in #Zambia 🇿🇲 to explore extractive sector #transparency and its role in strengthening domestic resource mobilisation in #Africa. Discussions have focused on the role EITI can play to support debt management, #energytransition, revenue collection, responsible mineral #supplychains and accountable governance of state-owned enterprises. Through panel discussions, interactive sessions and networking, participants shared their expertise and strategies to strengthen resource governance, improve #transparency and maximise the benefits of Africa's natural resources. 🌐 Yesterday, over 180 participants, including national coordinators, members of multi-stakeholder groups (MSGs), and non-MSG members, participated in the second session of the regional virtual workshop on beneficial ownership transparency for EITI implementing countries in #Africa. This workshop included participants from #Angola, #BurkinaFaso #CAR, #Cameroon, #CôtedIvoire, #Chad, #DRC, #Ghana, #Iraq, #Madagascar, #Malawi, #Mozambique, #SierraLeone, #Tanzania, #Togo, #Zambia and others.   💡 The session focused on the use of beneficial ownership data to identify key corruption risks in licensing processes and other areas within the extractive industries value chain. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on efforts by countries in using beneficial ownership information during licensing processes and shared successful strategies from various jurisdictions with practical data use case examples from #Ghana, #Nigeria and #Zambia.   ⏪ This second session built on the first workshop last week, that focused on the new requirements of the 2023 EITI Standard, particularly those concerning #beneficialownership transparency. The exchange of knowledge and experiences in the two workshops highlighted the significant impact of peer learning in enhancing #transparency and #accountability in the extractive industries across Africa.
