About us
The Simulation Center at Fairbanks Hall brings Indiana's current and future doctors, nurses and technicians together in collaborative practice in a variety of clinical settings. Jointly operated by Indiana University School of Medicine, Indiana University School of Nursing, and IU Health, the simulation center's mission is to provide a replica of the patient care environment where health care providers can learn to apply cognitive, psychomotor, and affective skills in an interdisciplinary approach. The vision of the simulation center is to instruct and facilitate learning while objectively measuring a learner's performance and competency in a health care environment.

Nursing new hires at Indiana University Health's Methodist Hospital and University Hospital go through a simulation event in our center as part of their onboarding. Educators Martine DeVriendt, Nurse Professional Development (NPD)/RN at Indiana University School of Nursing, and Sarah Prater, an NPD in Parkinsons’s disease (PD) at Methodist Hospital spoke to us about the simulation objectives. “The general scope for the course and simulation is to help the learners get familiar with our emergency management,” explained Prater. “The benefit of this simulation here at the Sim Center is that it's more realistic than a classroom – the setting is just like a patient in a room with the high-fidelity mannequin in a bed. They can interact with the patient and the equipment in a safe place before they’re working in our hospitals.” “This simulation gets these learners to think about assessing, to know what their resources are, and to practice some skills that come in handy in their own practices,” added DeVriendt. “There's a lot to know, so giving them this opportunity to be in a safe place is beneficial to them and our team.” #Nursing #simulation #onboarding

Our Sumulation Specialists Sarah Heider and Rachell Laughlin presented “Low-Cost Simulation Solutions” at the SUN Convention nferemce in Las Vegas. We are always happy to share ideas with and to learn from others in the simulation community. “The presentation went well and there were tons of questions after,” Heider shared. We proud of Sarah and Rachell and our whole sim team.

This week we’re running Communication and Negotiation Workshops for Women in our Virtual Clinic, an event funded by an Indiana University Health Values Grant that focusses on DEIJ issues. Learners spend a day with peers, learning from women faculty physicians, using literature from the fields of business and psychology, and working on ways to convey their own accomplishments, communicating new ideas, and negotiating. They then practice applying those skills by going through simulated scenarios with male SPs who portray upper management roles. “We in medicine are taught very little outside the scope of practicing medicine, and most of us enter our careers in our late 20s to early 30s,” said Anna Bona, Physician and Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Indiana University. “There's a pay gap of about at least $6,000 for women physicians with a potential $2 million income gap over a projected 40-year career, and a high dropout of women physicians from academics,” she continued. “Offering a career development course shortly before beginning their professional career seemed a possible solution to these issues. I wanted to offer this during their training, since we know that that gap starts job one.” #DEIJ #Simulation #businessskills

At The Simulation User Network (SUN) Conference, October 27-30, our Simulation Specialists Sarah Heider and Rachell Laughlin will present “Low-Cost Simulation Solutions.” “Our presentation offers affordable simulation solutions we’ve come up with at our sim center,” said Laughlin. “We’re bringing examples of items we’ve made from materials we already had on hand, including a Priapism trainer and wearable surgical wounds for SPs.” The SUN Conference focuses on best practices and engaging hands-on demonstrations to enhance simulation training programs across various healthcare disciplines, including Simulationists of all levels, Nurse Educators, Healthcare Educators, EMS Educators, Sim Lab Coordinators, Quality Improvement Specialists, and Risk Management Personnel. The event will take place in Henderson, NV, a Las Vegas suburb. More information at https://lnkd.in/dVCuZ34 #simulation #conference

This week RILEY CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL's Perinatal Center took their team through the simulation portion of a required bi-annual program. "The Neonatal Resuscitation Program is part of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and it's a required curriculum for labor and delivery, mother baby, and NICU respiratory therapists and nurses," explained Barbara Blanz Hidde, Clinical Program Manager for the Riley Perinatal Center. “Running at the simulation center allows us to teach the curriculum with high quality consistent training rather than slight modifications that can occur with varied instructors in individual courses.” #simulation #certification #healthcare

Each year our SPs and new hires must pass a series of workshops to make sure they are up to date with their knowledge of correct physical exam elements and communication/feedback with learners. "We base the workshops on Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking," said Karen Schroedle, BA, CHSE, Standardized Patient Trainer/Supervisor. "For some of the exam systems, we go a little bit further based on what the educators have requested. Our goal is to make sure every learner who goes through events with our Sim Center SP Program has the same experience because our SPs are consistent." There's also a communication workshop that includes how to give formative, verbal and written feedback, as well as how to receive feedback. If any SPs choose not to take these workshops or don't meet expectations, they are not booked to participate in any formative or summative evaluations that year. "The return on investment in running our program this way has been a much better experience for the learners who participate in our program," added Schroedle. "We've been able to calibrate to have a pretty significant increase in inter rater reliability, and so it has proven to meet the goals and expectations that we set when developing these workshops."
