Each year our SPs and new hires must pass a series of workshops to make sure they are up to date with their knowledge of correct physical exam elements and communication/feedback with learners. "We base the workshops on Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking," said Karen Schroedle, BA, CHSE, Standardized Patient Trainer/Supervisor. "For some of the exam systems, we go a little bit further based on what the educators have requested. Our goal is to make sure every learner who goes through events with our Sim Center SP Program has the same experience because our SPs are consistent." There's also a communication workshop that includes how to give formative, verbal and written feedback, as well as how to receive feedback. If any SPs choose not to take these workshops or don't meet expectations, they are not booked to participate in any formative or summative evaluations that year. "The return on investment in running our program this way has been a much better experience for the learners who participate in our program," added Schroedle. "We've been able to calibrate to have a pretty significant increase in inter rater reliability, and so it has proven to meet the goals and expectations that we set when developing these workshops."
