Justice Outside advances racial justice and equity in the outdoor and environmental movement.
About us
Justice Outside advances racial justice and equity in the outdoor and environmental movement. We shift resources to, build power with, and center the voices and leadership of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color because the health of current and future generations demands it. We envision a just world where Black, Indigenous, and Communities of Color experience safety, health, and abundant joy through meaningful relationships with one another and the outdoors. We’ve long worked to remove the barriers that have historically prevented communities from accessing meaningful experiences in nature and professional opportunities in the outdoor sector. We know that participating in outdoor programming offers those who have been most impacted by racial injustice a powerful source of healing and growth. Justice Outside has reached an exciting time in our organization’s history. Against a backdrop of increased urgency around racial equity and broad shifts in public consciousness in support of dismantling systemic racism, the need and demand for our work is greater than ever. We are poised to keep growing our capacity-building and leadership development work and continue building experiences that will position emerging leaders of color to influence the field at large.

💭Thinking a lot about the mother of the environmental justice movement, Hazel Johnson, today. What started as advocating for her neighborhood’s health and environmental concerns ignited a national movement. Hazel’s legacy lives on through People for Community Recovery (PCR) which she founded in 1979 to address environmental issues and tenant rights in her community. May we continue to draw inspiration from Black, Indigenous, and Leaders of Color now and always.✨ Learn more about PCR here: https://loom.ly/pmyr2Rw #EnvironmentalJustice #HazelJohnson

Please join us in congratulating and celebrating our dear friend, Atiya Wells, who was awarded the 2024 Robert F. Crawford Prize! In 2019, Atiya founded Backyard Basecamp in Baltimore, MD to educate and connect more families of color to local outdoor spaces. “It’s heartwarming to know the impact we have on our local community is being seen and heard across the country. We just turned five. But we really hit the ground running and have been charging forward to keep this important work at the forefront—ensuring that everyone in our community has access to nature and to food.” — Atiya Wells Read more about it here: https://loom.ly/qPH4bGg
