Karimu joins over 10,000 other NGOs/ Non-profits on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3 because we believe that generosity ignites hope that if everyone engages in the act of giving positive change is possible. Everyone who has supported Karimu has seen the power of generosity, and now over 15,000 people of Ayalagaya Ward have been lifted out of poverty. But we have more to do. Join us on Dec. 3 for Giving Tuesday Our goal this year is to build a girls’ bathroom at Endasago Primary School because the government is threatening to close the school due to unsanitary conditions. About us
Karimu founders Don Stoll and Marianne Kent-Stoll first visited Dareda Kati (Tanzania) in 2007 as tourists because they were curious about life in an African village. They were welcomed by the whole community and invited to come back. Shocked by some of the challenges facing the villagers they felt obligated to return. A shallow hole in the ground was serving as the only toilet for the entire student body, and the Tanzanian government had threatened to close the school. Don and Marianne donated $500 to finish construction of half a dozen toilets for which the villagers had run out of funds, and the school stayed open. Back in California, Don and Marianne founded the nonprofit Karimu International Help Foundation in 2008. The Swahili word karimu, meaning “generous” and “welcoming,” aptly describes Dareda’s people. To this day, Karimu has made a huge impact in the community. 30% reduction of stomach related diseases in school-age children 4 hours per day of girls time saved by not having to fetch water, now availabe for education 50% increase in doctor visits by children below 5 years 80% more women returning for pregnancy check ups 96% increase in pass rate for the Secondary School National Exam 22% more people receiving vaccinations Karimu seeks solutions to the manifold interconnected problems of the poor. That awareness came in the beginning, as it continues to do so today, from the villagers themselves. Karimu’s first principle has always been to listen to the villagers. No matter how big Karimu grows, however, we will remember that our work began with the simple acts of making friends and fixing a toilet. We intend to continue to do small things with meticulous care. Visit our website to learn more.

Sanitation is a human right According to UNICEF , campaigns to encourage simple hygiene practices like washing hands with soap can reduce the incidence of diarrhea by an estimated 47 per cent while use of proper sanitation can reduce cases of diarrhea by an estimated 36 per cent. Karimu has seen such results when we build new bathrooms and provide hygiene training in schools. Students attendance and exam scores go up, and we now see 30% less stomach diseases. World Toilet Day : November 19 Sanitation is a human right. Karimu recognizes that sanitation is of the utmost importance ---to date we have built 10 new bathrooms, for 10 schools---we have 4 more to go. Without meeting these basic needs, students cannot remain healthy and succeed. That is why on Giving Tuesday we are focusing on building school bathrooms, especially for girls. According to the United Nations: “Everyone should have access to a toilet that is secure, hygienic and private, and connected to a safely managed sanitation system to properly dispose of waste. When toilet systems are inadequate, damaged or broken, pollution spreads and deadly diseases get unleashed. For women and girls in particular, a lack of safely managed sanitation, water and hygiene services leaves them more vulnerable to abuse, attack and ill-health, affecting their ability to study, work and live in dignity. Today, the world is seriously off track to achieve safely managed sanitation for all by 2030 – one of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6).” #WorldToiletDay #SanitationForAll #HumanRightToSanitation #KarimuFoundation #HygieneMatters #SafeSanitation #SDG6 #GirlsEducation #HealthySchools #CleanWaterAndSanitation #EmpoweringGirls #GivingTuesday #SanitationEquality

😍 Cute right?!?!? 😍 These are some of my friends in Tanzania. They are some of the 80 special kids that are living and studying in the dormitory and the special classroom Karimu International Help Foundation built for them. Before this, most of them were hidden from the society, many people believe to have a special child is a punishment from God. We started our fundraising campaign for 2025 to expand our impact in Africa. I'll add a link for donations in the comments here. Any small donation is extremely helpful, but we also need people willing to donate $1k USD, $5k USD and $10k USD! For anyone that become a donor, I can bring you to Tanzania with me to see with your own eyes the impact of your investment. I promise: you will receive much more than you give. Also I believe I can help your HR Teams to engage in ESG campaigns with REAL IMPACT that can change the lives of their employees forever. Ask me how here in the comments and I'm happy to talk more. #Purpose #Impact #ChangingLives #ChangingTheWorld Empower Business School

Biochar can help mitigate climate change by eliminating field burning, and therefore removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It can also improve agricultural productivity and waste management. Highlights from article about Biochar about Karimu’s success: - Increased productivity and revenue - Farmers saw their income rise from Tsh 233,777 ($85.6 USD) to Tsh 368,631 ($135 USD) per ¼ acre. - The increase in yield, coupled with the cost savings from replacing industrial fertilizers with biochar, significantly enhanced profitability. Matching Grant: $30,000 Thank you Quantaphy! Students deserve to a safe, healthy learning environment Debbie Burns-Walton and Ken Terry, owners of a Santa Cruz, California, company called Quantaphy, are offering a generous $30,000 matching grant to help Karimu meet urgent needs. (To learn about our other fundraising goals, please see karimufoundation.org.) In Arri we must work quickly to build new toilets for Endasago Primary School. The school is in danger of being closed because of poor sanitation, leading to stomach diseases and urinary tract infections. New bathrooms, including a private space for girls on their period, will keep Endasago Primary open. Girls’ attendance in Karimu-built new bathrooms increases by at least 10%. Let’s protect the learning environment of all students. #EducationForAll #DonateForChange #HealthInSchools #SafeLearningEnvironment #GirlsEducationMatters #EmpowerCommunities #SocialImpact #SanitationForAll #SupportEducation #MatchMyGift #CommunitySupport #GlobalHealth #EqualOpportunities
