World Toilet Day : November 19 Sanitation is a human right. Karimu recognizes that sanitation is of the utmost importance ---to date we have built 10 new bathrooms, for 10 schools---we have 4 more to go. Without meeting these basic needs, students cannot remain healthy and succeed. That is why on Giving Tuesday we are focusing on building school bathrooms, especially for girls. According to the United Nations: “Everyone should have access to a toilet that is secure, hygienic and private, and connected to a safely managed sanitation system to properly dispose of waste. When toilet systems are inadequate, damaged or broken, pollution spreads and deadly diseases get unleashed. For women and girls in particular, a lack of safely managed sanitation, water and hygiene services leaves them more vulnerable to abuse, attack and ill-health, affecting their ability to study, work and live in dignity. Today, the world is seriously off track to achieve safely managed sanitation for all by 2030 – one of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6).” #WorldToiletDay #SanitationForAll #HumanRightToSanitation #KarimuFoundation #HygieneMatters #SafeSanitation #SDG6 #GirlsEducation #HealthySchools #CleanWaterAndSanitation #EmpoweringGirls #GivingTuesday #SanitationEquality

World Toilet Day 2024: Time to Reflect and Act Today, we join the world in marking World Toilet Day a day dedicated to highlighting the importance of safe sanitation and the urgent need to tackle the global sanitation crisis. As individuals and as a country, it’s crucial to take a moment to assess: ✅ Our Progress: What steps have we taken to improve access to safe toilets and sanitation? ❌ Our Challenges: What barriers still exist, such as open defecation, lack of infrastructure, or insufficient awareness? 🚀 The Journey Ahead: How can we commit to deliberate actions that ensure access to safe and dignified sanitation for everyone? In Nigeria, open defecation remains a pressing issue, affecting public health, dignity, and the environment. But we have the power to change this! By advocating for better policies, supporting local sanitation projects, and raising awareness, we can combat open defecation and build a healthier, more sustainable future. 💡 Remember: Access to proper sanitation is not a privilege—it’s a fundamental human right. Let’s take deliberate action today, for ourselves, our communities, and future generations. #WorldToiletDay #SanitationMatters #EndOpenDefecation #SustainableDevelopment

I don't normally post, but today is World Toilet Day, and it is the one day we have to raise awareness of the often-overlooked sanitation crisis. 427 million children still go to a school without a toilet. Perhaps even more shocking, is that half of those have access to a toilet, but it’s too dirty to use. At Domestos, we called this “Toilet Loss” – because a loss is more painful than a gain; and a loss gets attention. And attention is what this issue needs. So I'm super proud to launch our two-year research programme with Economist Impact which found a tenth of school sanitation spending (US$18.5bn) has been lost building 6.2 million toilets that have not been maintained. It covers 65% of the world’s school children in 118 countries, and was featured in The Economist (the actual newspaper!). This is the result of a group of very passionate people who know through collective action we can #stoptoiletloss. Special thanks to them all - to name a few: Shuchi Suri Aalap Sharma Marianne Yarrow (Blamire) Simran Gill Habib Benzian Shivangi Jain Hannah Cartwright Dina Alborno Dr. Bella Monse Tom Slaymaker Eve Gillespie Ida Aagenaes Read full report in the link in comments too.

From 2022 to 2024, we have enabled about 44,000 people, including 21,000 children, to access proper sanitation facilities. However, much remains to be done to ensure universal and equitable access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation for all in order to achieve the SDG 6 by 2030. Our dream is a World where everyone has access to dignified sanitation and effective hygiene practices. Sidney Shea Godfrey Mawaa Banao Bakary Guy Bessounadié https://lnkd.in/eufJKzny

World Toilet Day, observed annually on 19th November, is a global United Nations observance that aims to raise awareness of the critical global sanitation crisis. Since its inception in 2013, the day has highlighted the staggering 3.5 billion people worldwide who still live without access to safe and dignified sanitation services. The 2024 theme, "Toilets: A Place for Peace," underscores the essential role that sanitation plays in fostering safety, dignity, and peace in communities. Sanitation systems are not just physical structures; they are essential in protecting public health, safeguarding the environment, and promoting social stability. 3.5 billion people still do not have safe sanitation services, while 419 million people practice “open defecation”. Poor sanitation puts children at risk of childhood diseases and malnutrition that can impact their overall development, learning and, later in life, economic opportunities. While some parts of the world have improved access to sanitation, millions of children in poor and rural areas have been left behind

Why are School WASH Projects Important? Access to clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene facilities isn't just about basic needs—it's about building healthier futures for children and communities. WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) projects transform schools, especially in underserved areas, by creating safer, more equitable environments for students to thrive. Why Is This Important? 🌟 Health & Wellness: Reducing waterborne diseases and infections keeps kids in class and ready to learn. 📚 Attendance & Retention: Safe facilities mean fewer absences, especially for girls. 🎯 Better Learning: When basic needs are met, concentration and academic performance soar. 💪 Dignity & Confidence: Private, safe facilities foster respect and self-esteem. Our WASH projects have been successfully implemented at Sandakahle and Zimisele Primary Schools thanks to our partnership with @diageo. Continued collaboration can ensure our vision of transforming lives and creating sustainable futures for schools and communities can continue. How Can Schools Drive WASH Improvements? The 3-Star Approach is an innovative framework designed to improve Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) practices in schools. It provides a step-by-step method to ensure schools have clean water, adequate sanitation, and foster sustainable hygiene behaviors. Here’s a quick breakdown: 1-Star: Focuses on basic WASH access: schools meet minimum hygiene standards. 2-Star: Focuses on Improved Sanitation and Hygiene. 3-Star: Promotes long-term behavior change and community involvement. Why is this important? Schools play a critical role in shaping hygiene behaviors for future generations. A safe, clean environment empowers students and reduces illness. Stay tuned! Over the coming weeks, I’ll break down each stage of the approach and discuss how schools can implement sustainable WASH solutions. What do you think is the biggest WASH challenge schools face today? Many public restrooms are failing to deliver on their promise of providing safe, clean, and dignified sanitation facilities. Despite their importance, public restrooms often lack proper maintenance, cleaning, and management. This neglect has severe consequences: - Public health risks - Environmental hazards - Negative economic impact But there's a solution! Training sanitation workers is crucial to addressing these issues. Providing proper training and support can help to improve the quality and accessibility of public restrooms, creating a safer and more hygienic environment for everyone. At the World Toilet Organization, we're committed to bridging this gap through advocacy and capacity-building programs. Feel free to share your experiences or ideas on improving public restroom. Together let's create a future where public restrooms truly serve their purpose. #WorldToiletOrganization #SanitationWorkersMatter #mrtoilet #TrainingForImpact #SustainableDevelopment #ToiletsForAll Sarika Saluja
