In a major victory for public schools and libraries nationwide, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that a lawsuit against AT&T subsidiary Wisconsin Bell can proceed, reinforcing key protections that prevent corporations from overcharging public schools and libraries for broadband services. Last October SEF filed an amicus brief to help ensure schools, particularly those serving a high percentage of low-income students, have affordable access to internet services through the E-Rate program—a critical resource that helps bridge the digital divide. BREAKING - In a unanimous ruling by the Supreme Court (9-0), the Supreme Court says reimbursement requests filed with the FCC’s telecommunications services subsidy program for low-income schools and libraries ARE subject to government fraud claims. (Wisconsin Bell v. Heath, 23-1127) "Indeed, those transfers look like most Government spending: Money usually comes to the Government from private parties, and it then usually goes out to the broader community to fund programs and activities.
