  • Taking a walk with grief is one of life’s most difficult and humbling experiences. Grief forces us to accept the reality of our loss and find a way to move forward with our lives. It requires no small measure of courage, hope, and grace, especially when it signals the end of our life as we know it. Kenosis owner Christine Turo-Shields recently had the honor of interviewing Sister Connie Kramer, a longtime friend and guide who has now embarked on her own walk with grief in the wake of a terminal medical diagnosis.   • In honor of Thanksgiving, we asked our staff what they are grateful for in their work at Kenosis. Here is what Christine Turo-Shields, LCSW, had to say: Q: What are you grateful for? A: I am grateful that I have a front row seat every single day to watch miracles unfold in my clients’ lives. It is truly gratifying to bear witness to the transformations, both small and at times seismic, that occur in each person’s life. Q: When have you felt grateful for this thing? A: As a therapist specializing in grief and trauma, I talk with clients every single day about life and death, including those who wrestle with suicidal thoughts. One dear soul was battling chronic suicidal ideation, symptomatic of intractable OCD, which was not responding to psychotherapy or medication. After undergoing a capsulotomy (a surgical procedure on the brain), the suicidal ideation has all but been relieved. The gift of modern medicine, especially in the area of neuroscience, has given this individual the gift of life—beyond just surviving, but thriving as well! I am simply in awe, each and every day, of the miracles that unfold before my very eyes!

A: I am grateful for being able to see my clients’ lives improve. Q: When have you felt grateful for this thing? A: One time I felt grateful for my client’s improvement was when she was able to smile the entire session and share with me that her happiness had impacted her entire family’s well-being for the better.

  • November 23rd is International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, which is dedicated to all those who have lost a loved one to suicide. 💔 If you are a survivor of suicide loss, please know that we see and understand your pain. Coping with this sort of loss can be unbearably difficult, but healing is possible. Here are a few gentle reminders for moving forward: 💛 Find Support: Whether it’s a trusted friend, a support group or a counselor, you don’t have to carry this burden alone. 🕊️ Allow Yourself to Grieve: Healing isn’t linear. Let yourself feel all your emotions without judgment. 🌿 Focus on Small Steps: Be kind to yourself. Some days, simply getting through is an achievement, and that’s OK. 🙏 Lean on Faith: Prayers, rituals, or quiet reflection can offer comfort and peace during the hardest moments.
