A lack of secure land rights undermines farmers’ incentive to invest in improvements that would foster economic growth and protect land from environmental degradation. Landesa works to advance inclusive, equitable land rights reform. Working with national governments and local communities in more than 50 countries, Landesa is securing significant land rights reform that encourages climate-smart land management practices. Landesa also works with civil society organizations to raise awareness and encourage participation by women and young people in the land reform process. The transportation sector is responsible for approximately one quarter of the global emissions that cause climate change that affects all of us – but hurt the world’s poor most. Shift EV is an electric mobility technology startup based in Cairo, Egypt that’s electrifying commercial vehicle fleets in emerging markets. By swapping out existing vehicles’ internal combustion engines with an electric battery pack in a matter of hours, Shift EV provides an immediate and affordable clean energy solution that helps optimize routes and operations while reducing air pollution for residents in rapidly urbanizing cities. A story of innovation from Egypt today — Aly Eltayeb and Shift EV launched their partnership with Danone Egypt to electrify 50% of their distribution fleet. The transportation sector worldwide emits one-quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions. Electric vehicle adoption is critical to tackling the climate crisis. Shift EV is taking on this challenge by “electrofitting” existing fossil-fueled vehicles, replacing internal combustion engines with an electric battery pack. Shift’s expansion today to pick-up trucks is a major accomplishment and will increase efficiency, reduce emissions, and improve air quality for residents in rapidly urbanizing cities. Kartick K. Nearly 800 million people globally live without electricity, and 800 million more have unreliable access. In West Africa, only 42 percent of the total population and 8 percent of rural residents had any electricity access in 2022, one of the lowest rates of electricity access in the world. Energicity is expanding clean energy access across West Africa to drive economic growth and poverty reduction. It’s an economic and a climate solution that reduces the need for diesel power or cutting down forests to burn wood. Watch Energicity’s solar-powered mini-grids deliver affordable, sustainable electric power to households and businesses, bypassing the need for significant infrastructure and quickly scaling access to services and work opportunities that have traditionally been out of reach. Refrigeration is essential to combating food waste; nearly one-third of the 1.6 billion tons of food wasted each year could be saved if kept cold—enough to feed 950 million people. In Nigeria, as in most developing countries, food waste is largely due to a lack of cold storage and cold chain infrastructure. ColdHubs Limited uses solar energy to reduce food waste and improve livelihoods for African farmers. Watch ColdHubs Limited deliver solar-powered, walk-in cooling stations to markets and farmers across Nigeria to combat food waste, limit greenhouse gas emissions that come from rotting food, and strengthen local economic and living conditions. Climate change is having a massive and unavoidable impact on those in extreme poverty. Those contributing the least to the crisis are most vulnerable to the extreme weather, natural disasters, health hazards, epidemics, conflict, forced migration, and economic downturns caused by climate change. It’s the defining challenge of our time. Yet, across the globe, people are driving real solutions to meet these major challenges. King Philanthropies and Pique Action are proud to highlight their stories of ingenuity, dedication, and impact at the intersection of improving livelihoods and fighting climate change. Watch Reinventing Tomorrow and meet leaders and communities who are coming together to catalyze climate solutions that make a meaningful difference in the lives of the world’s poorest. https://lnkd.in/g784dMFe Kartick K.
