KEY(Korea Europe & You) is pleased to share a new publication, as we confront the current political circumstances in Korea and France. A cross-interview was conducted in Seoul with international politics experts Mathieu Duchâtel (Resident Senior Fellow for Asia and Director of International Studies at Institut Montaigne) and Seungjoo Lee (Dean of College of Social Sciences and Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Chung-Ang University), with the moderation by Philippe Li. They discussed the recent political incidents in Korea and France, taking a distance from the events and drawing interesting parallels between the two nations' evolution of the democratic landscape. They also emphasized the effects and the challenges incurred by political polarization in both cases. Furthermore, in a time of political deadlock and uncertainties, both experts and the moderator stressed the role of institutions and constitutional safeguards in confronting political crisis. They also pointed out that the exercise of power should always remain connected to public support, acknowledging the difficulty of achieving a suitable balance between these two elements. To gain insights from the two experts on the current situation, follow this link: https://lnkd.in/g5b_BbEs Please note that this publication includes only a few parts of the whole interview. The remaining contents will be available in a subsequent publication.

KEY(Korea Europe & You) is pleased to share that we successfully organized our final event of 2024 - “ESG & Sustainability Briefing Session" with Dr. Young Tae KIM, Secretary General of the ITF - International Transport Forum at the OECD. On December 11, after an introduction by Mr. Philippe Li, President of KEY, Dr. Kim delivered invaluable insights into ITF’s role in sustainable transport, emphasizing global decarbonization efforts across 69 member countries on 5 continents. His presentation also featured an in-depth exploration of ITF’s Modelling Framework, offering a detailed view of how the organization drives sustainable solutions worldwide, encompassing green, safety, inclusivity, gender, and digital perspectives. The session was followed by an interactive networking discussion among the participants. The conversation expanded to broader perspectives, highlighting the importance of adopting a comprehensive approach to address issues like aging population, biodiversity, and green partnerships. The session underscored the need for stronger cooperation among government officials and stakeholders to systematically tackle the challenges in ESG and sustainability. As we wrap up, KEY would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the participants who made this event so meaningful, including Gérald Massenet (Crédit Agricole Corporate & Investment Bank), Jaehoon Yoo (Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation - KDIC), Raphael Seung-Ho Lee (Deputy Economic Counselor, Embassy of France in the US), Yoon-Gih Ahn (POSCO), John (Junyong) Hyun (LG Uplus Corp), Fabrice Espinosa (Asia Sustainable Aviation Fuel Association - ASAFA / Studio 28), Jay Jeongwoo Lee (KB Bank), Oriane Lemaire (EU-Korea Green Partnership Action), and Zachary Petit (Seoul Women's University - Business law and economics). The Nobel Prize ceremony will take place in Stockholm, with one of the evening's highlights being the recognition of Han Kang. In a time marked by anger, confusion, and confrontation in various parts of the world, let us hope the values embodied by the Nobel institution and the laureates will inspire us all: wisdom over impulsiveness, dignity over indecency, thoughtful reflection over short-sighted views and integrity over opportunism.
KEY(Korea Europe & You) is delighted to share that KEY’s first themed afterwork ≪Parlons Littérature≫ was held in Paris at August Debouzy office on November 28th. We were honored to have Serge Safran (co-founder of éditions Zulma, founder of éditions Serge Safran and first French publisher of Han Kang) and Jean-Claude de Crescenzo (founder of Decrescenzo Éditeurs, director of the Korean literature magazine Keulmadang, and co-translator) lead a compelling discussion on the recent Nobel prize winner Han Kang’s works and the broader context of Korean literature in France. The debate was moderated by Ms. Romane Tomio, a member of KEY. ✨Key Takeaways: - While Korean culture has made significant global strides through music, film, and television, literature has often remained on the sidelines of this "Korean soft power wave." However, this is changing as authors like Nobel Prize laureate Han Kang bring Korean literature into the global spotlight. - Although still relatively underrepresented in France, Korean literature is gaining increasing interest. The discussion highlighted the major waves in the introduction and evolution of Korean literature within the French publishing landscape. Translators and publishers like Jean-Claude de Crescenzo and Serge Safran have played a pivotal role in this development, bringing authors such as Lee Seung-u or Hwang Sok-yong to French audiences. - The discussion emphasized how literature can provide a deeper understanding of Korea’s culture and identity, serving as a bridge for cultural exchange. By exploring key periods in contemporary Korean literature, the conversation revealed how societal changes have influenced the themes and voices of Korean authors. - Beyond the stories themselves, the discussion explored the challenges facing the publishing industry, including market trends, the difficulties of translating Korean literature, and the role of subsidies in promoting works on the global stage. The evening concluded with engaging conversations during the networking session, where participants shared insights and ideas. The conference can be viewed through the following link: https://lnkd.in/gUwb7P4n Special thanks to August Debouzy and to Pierre Descheemaeker and Basile Ader for hosting this event, to Serge Safran and Jean-Claude de Crescenzo for their thoughtful insights, to Philippe Berterottière, CEO of GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz) and board member of KEY, for his welcoming remarks and to Elisabeth Laurin, former Ambassador of France to Korea for her attendance and support to KEY. ✨New Publication✨ KEY(Korea Europe & You) is delighted to share our latest publication: "Innovations in Urban Planning and Smart Cities : A Comparative Dialogue between France and South Korea”. Last April, we were thrilled to support and assist with the academic trip of ESSEC MS® Management Urbain et Immobilier (MUI) to South Korea. During this enriching experience, ESSEC students visited a variety of significant locations, including the Seoul Metropolitan Government (서울특별시)'s Urban Planning Division, Yonsei University for the ‘KEY-ESSEC-Yonsei Forum’ on Urbanism, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office, Pangyo Techno Valley, the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority, and the Raemian Gallery, which featured an introduction by Samsung C&T Corporation. These experiences culminated in this article, divided into three sections: 1. Yonsei-ESSEC-KEY Forum 2. A Week in Korean Cities: A Comparative Urban Planning Study 3. French and Korean Urbanism: Insights from French Students The first two sections offer a blend of academic and practical insights. The Yonsei-ESSEC-KEY Forum provided a platform for in-depth discussions with experts on architecture, urban planning, and smart cities. The comparative urban study, on the other hand, allowed participants to immerse themselves in the Korean urban landscape, visiting key sites and gaining firsthand experience of urban and regional planning practices. In particular, the third section, "French and Korean Urbanism: Insights from French Students", presents a comparison of urban planning in the two regions through four key themes: Housing and Density, Transports, Smart Cities, and Security and Control. This analysis, drawn from the perspectives of ESSEC students and a KEY Korean member, offers valuable insights into the similarities and differences in urban development between France and Korea. As we share this article, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Professor Edouard Dequeker and Professor Sanghoon Lee, whose efforts made this academic trip possible. A special thank you also goes to Yann Duveau, Alaïs Deligny, Octave Poincignon, Anatole Castelnau, Imane Midafi, and Zachary Petit for sharing their valuable French insights, as well as to Saerom Chong, who provided a comparative Korean perspective for this article.
