  • Last year, the nation’s top accident investigator said that a surge in close calls between planes at U.S. airports was a “clear warning sign” that the aviation system is under stress. While these events are rare, the NTSB warned that air traffic control staffing shortages have surged since the pandemic, causing irregular work schedules and mandatory overtime, leaving ATC fatigued and strained. The FAA identified 23 of the most serious types of close calls in the last year, up from 16 the year before; however, independent estimates suggest those figures grossly understate such incidents. Some notable incidents already in 2024: Ø In January this year, an incident at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport involved a Japanese Airlines’ A350 landing and ramming a fuel-laden Japanese Coast Guard plane on the runway. It’s a miracle that there weren’t more casualties — though for the Japanese Coast Guard crew on their way to bring much-needed supplies to earthquake victims, it was a disaster. Five people on the Coast Guard plane died, and the captain narrowly escaped with serious injuries. Ø In May, an air traffic controller instructed a Southwest Airlines Flight to cross a runway at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport while the JetBlue flight was starting its takeoff roll on the same runway. Luckily, JetBlue quickly aborted its takeoff. The very next day at JFK, a breakdown in communication between air traffic controllers caused a near disaster, as a SWISS jet was cleared for takeoff while four other planes were cleared to cross the same runway. Fortunately, the SWISS pilots figured out what was going on and aborted their takeoff. Technology and artificial intelligence are pivotal in enhancing ATC operations, enabling them to manage increased air traffic volumes with greater precision and reliability. Kquika’s SANS.AI system is an advanced technology that revolutionizes air traffic control to enhance safety, efficiency, and user experience. Its real-time dashboard offers controllers critical flight statistics and performance metrics for proactive management, while AI-driven algorithms recommend optimal runway usage and automate landing sequences. The intuitive, role-based user interface minimizes human error and simplifies complex tasks, empowering controllers with comprehensive, up-to-date flight information.
