About us

Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work. Lambda Legal has been making the case for equality on behalf of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV throughout the United States for more than 35 years. Our strategy combines groundbreaking work in the courts with innovative education and public policy work to change the hearts and minds of the public — and to teach people how to make sure that LGBT civil rights are respected. Through our offices in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles, we average over 60 cases at any given time, tackling a range of issues including marriage, relationships and parenting; employment discrimination; HIV; health care; transgender rights; youth issues; and the battle for fair courts. Lambda Legal’s mission is to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work. We see our efforts as an integral part of the continuing struggle for civil rights in America.

  • Through decades of struggle, through moments of fear and triumph—love like theirs has endured. 💜🏳️🌈 Rainie Cole and Cindi Creager’s love story is a beautiful example of how powerful it is to love your person out loud with the same benefits and recognitions as other couples. In a time when our community is being targeted, we need to uplift LGBTQ+ love louder than ever. “We’re both sentimental saps...but that’s what makes our relationship so special. That, and we love to laugh – and dance.” LGBTQ+ rights continue to be under attack as some attempt to erase our history, restrict our freedoms, and silence our love. But they will never succeed, because our love will always persevere. Share this video and remind the world: LGBTQ+ love is here to stay! 🏳️🌈

  • LOVE always shines brighter, even in the face of injustice. ❤️ ️ We spoke with mother Lizette, and her trans son Daniel, at the National LGBTQ Task Force's #CreatingChange conference and the love and support she has for her son is heartwarming and unwavering. Together, they are fighting for a future where trans youth are safe, supported, and free to be themselves. As trans rights advocates, they also spoke at Lambda Legal’s Freedom To Be Ourselves rally in December in front of the Supreme Court during oral arguments for U.S. v. Skrmetti, pushing for the rights of trans youth nationwide. Right now, transgender youth are under attack and politicians are pushing laws that threaten their healthcare, safety, and very existence. At a time when our community is being targeted, we must be louder in our love. Share this video and remind the world: trans youth deserve protection, celebration, and the freedom to thrive! 🏳️⚧️

  • 🎉 HUGE WIN: Today, in a victory for transgender youth, their families, and their medical providers, a federal district court issued a temporary restraining order blocking enforcement of a Trump administration executive order attempting to shut down access nationwide to gender-affirming medical care for transgender people under 19. “As today’s decision makes clear, the president does not have the power to unilaterally condition federal funding by requiring discrimination. To the contrary, our laws and Constitution forbid it. We hope that with today’s decision, healthcare entities can go back to caring for their patients instead of abandoning them over fears of losing admittedly critical federal funding.” – Omar Gonzalez-Pagan, Lambda Legal Senior Counsel and Health Care Strategist Read our full statement: https://lnkd.in/eTnprfec ACLU, PFLAG National, GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality, Jenner & Block, Hogan Lovells

  • CASE UPDATE: Earlier today, the Department of Justice notified the Supreme Court that the United States has changed its position in U.S. v. Skrmetti and is now aligned with the Tennessee Respondents. U.S. v. Skrmetti is a landmark Supreme Court case challenging Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming hormone therapyies for transgender adolescents. Oral arguments were held on December 4 and a decision is expected from the Court by June 2025. “Tennessee’s discriminatory and baseless ban continues to upend the lives of our plaintiffs–transgender adolescents, their families, and a medical provider. These Tennesseans have had their Constitutional right to equal protection under the law violated by the state of Tennessee. This latest move from the Trump administration is another indication that they are using the power of the federal government to target marginalized groups for further discrimination. We condemn this latest move and will continue to fight to vindicate the constitutional rights of all LGBTQ people.” Read our joint statement: https://lnkd.in/ePhXjJCh ACLU, ACLU of Tennessee, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP

  • HIV justice is racial justice! 🗣️ Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), a day to recognize how HIV disproportionately impacts Black communities—AND to act against the barriers to health equity. Did you know that the Trump administration’s DEI ban threatens decades of HIV research, funding, and access to care? Even the CDC no longer provides resources for NBHAAD because of this administration’s policies. This is not just an attack on diversity—it’s an attack on Black health. We see what’s happening. We will challenge it. And we won’t let decades of progress be undone. ❤️ Visit our HIV Know Your Rights page: https://lnkd.in/exWHNxrd 💼 Learn about our HIV work: https://lnkd.in/gTiCxDAt 📚 Follow these orgs for resources: NMAC AIDS United #BlackHistoryMonth #NBHAAD #HIVAwareness

  • In case you missed it: The NCAA has bafflingly capitulated to President Trump’s cruel transgender sports ban, eager to abandon its promise “to help foster welcoming environments … for all student-athletes.” Lambda Legal Senior Attorney Carl Charles: “NCAA leadership says it “strongly believes” that a clear, consistent rule of excluding these students will “best serve today’s student-athletes.” It’s hard to fathom how this can be so. ... The NCAA’s fast, wholesale embrace of this order is even harder to understand because the organization’s mission only concerns collegiate competition.” “The order, on the other hand, applies to all types of K-12 athletic activity. ... No matter the sport and level of participation, deeming the participation of transgender girls and young women an unfair safety threat unjustly denies them the proven health, social, and relational benefits of sports participation that should be available for all youth, full stop.” Read the complete statement on our website: https://lnkd.in/efvAyBzF
