On November 19, 2023, the Langara Accounting Club (LAC) and Capilano Accounting Association (CAA) hosted the first cross-school business case competition! The event was inspired by the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the Presidents of Langara College and Capilano University.
I had the honor of working with CAA’s President Yaseen Shivji to create, organize, and execute this multi-faceted event.
With the guidance of faculty, Yaseen and I created the rules and parameters for this event. A huge HUGE thank you to Ronald Wong, Megan Hamilton, David McMichael, Leigh Oikawa, and Leigha Nevay. This event could not have happened without their support.
The teams chosen to compete were invited to a workshop where they learned more details about the competition. Tiana Tomassetti, CPA and Katie Gordon, CPA came to host this workshop and gave tips and tricks on how to navigate a case competition. We ended the workshop with a fun and short case about grilled cheese!
On the day of our competition, we had four judges. A huge thank you to our judges Gallant Ma, Dina Devenish, Sean Brown, CPA, and Henry Chu for spending their Sunday listening and critiquing the solutions each team came up with.
Also, in attendance were esteemed guests from both Langara and CapU. Thank you to our esteemed guests for attending and speaking at our event!
Marianne Gianacopoulos - Langara Management Programs Division Chair
Laureen Styles - Capilano VP Academic Provost
Tammy Towill, FCPA, FCMA - Capilano Chair, School of Business
Congratulations to all the teams who participated. Those who placed in the top three won cash prizes that were presented to them on giant cheques!
First Place ($650) - Nightwing: Priya McMurtrie, Amanda Phillips, Vishal Prem Jagarapu, and Terrence Alanis
Second Place ($400) - AIM Consulting: Aidan Herbertson, Steven Leung, Texi Wu, and Kritika Jain
Third Place ($250) - RYC Consulting: Olivia Chia, Angeline Ricky, and Lucas Yeung
After the competition portion of the day wrapped up, we hosted a networking event at the Tap and Barrel across the street. Students got to socialize with firm representatives and accounting industry professionals.
This event could not have been a success without Yaseen, the LAC and CAA teams, our faculty sponsors, our industry sponsors, and last but not least, to the memorandum of understanding that initiated the idea for this collaborative event.
I am so thankful to have met and worked with everyone involved!
Here are some photos from the event!
