Nonprofits conduct yearly audits to ensure financial integrity, comply with regulatory requirements, and build trust with our donors and the community we serve. This process helps us assess our financial health, identify areas for improvement, and ensure that every dollar is used effectively to further our mission. Last week our FABULOUS finance team worked with our auditors to ensure a smooth audit of our Fiscal Year 2024! Join us in thanking Ruth, David, Maria, and Daniel, for all their hard work.
About us
We use the power of the law to secure dignity, opportunity, and well-being for people facing illness or disability. The agency, which merged three of the nation’s leading medical-legal partnership (MLP) programs to build a Midwestern hub of medical-legal program and policy development, is renowned for its expertise across complex intersections of disability benefits, health care services, education, employment, and other publicly-funded supports at the federal, state, and local levels. In 2015 we changed our name from AIDS Legal Council of Chicago to LEGAL COUNCIL FOR HEALTH JUSTICE.

Legal Council's Kenya Burnett (she/her), Legal Director of our AIDS Legal Council (ALC) program, was a featured speaker at Young Lawyers Section of the Chicago Bar Association seminar on Centering Racial Justice in Legal Aid on March 14. The seminar focused on why race should be a central consideration to administering legal aid, and included a discussion of the historical context of segregations of communities in Chicago that have led to a concentration of poverty. At the seminar, Kenya provided key updates on the Illinois Legal Aid Racial Justice & Diversity Collaborative. This new Collaborative will build a statewide platform to support legal aid organizations as they address internal racial diversity, equity, inclusion; increase capacity to work with the community; and individually and collectively bring a racial equity lens to their external advocacy. Legal Council thanks Kenya for all that she does to promote racial justice in legal aid work across the state!
