Brooklyn’s Brevard Street was once a bustling Black business district. Today, the Grace AME Zion Church and the Mecklenburg Investment Company Building are the only structures that remain. These landmarks remind us of Brooklyn’s rich history as a center of labor, faith, and community life. Leaders at the AME Zion Church also played a critical role in intellectual and spiritual labor, moving their publishing house to Charlotte in 1894 and producing The Star of Zion, a vital voice for Black political and spiritual life. This Black History Month, we remember the labor of those who built and sustained this community. Discover the rich history of Brooklyn for yourself by taking our KnowCLT Brooklyn Walking Tour -- a journey through Charlotte’s Black heritage that brings this vibrant neighborhood’s stories to life: https://lnkd.in/eXx2RZXA #LevineMuseum #OurNewSouth #CharlotteNC #CLT #NCHistory

Did you know that Brooklyn was home to nearly 200 Black-owned businesses in its prime? From restaurants and theaters to insurance companies and funeral homes, African American entrepreneurs transformed this neighborhood into an economic powerhouse. Despite systemic barriers, these businesses thrived, providing essential services and fostering a spirit of self-sufficiency in a segregated South. This #BlackHistoryMonth, we celebrate the labor and entrepreneurship that made Brooklyn a beacon of progress.
