  • Is the worst part of the job search the rejection? The endlessness? The futility? All of the above? Unfortunately for many the job search process is all of the above - but it doesn't have to be all negative. There is personal growth in the process. Recognizing who you are, what you want - and what you don't If we hold onto personal growth in the process, we build resilience, strength, and knowledge. And all of that makes us stronger.

  • Did you enter grad school and think 'Well there will be a job waiting for me at the end'? A lot of people have this belief, and then get to the end and realize it's really hard to get a job! They then begin to question, why did I do this? What's wrong with me? Did I make a mistake? The problem isn't you. The problem is grad school doesn't prepare you for transitioning to industry. There are huge knowledge gaps. So take a breath, acknowledge you have a lot still to learn, and begin by understanding the biotech industry. Have informational interviews. Ask people 'What do I really need to know to be successful'? Ask people any question that you want, because guess what? People in industry were you once, and mostly they just really want to help.

  • Do you know the real reason why academics leave academia? It's not because they hate research - they love that. It's the politics, the abuse, the egos, the red tape. They leave because the academic system is broken. And it's heartbreaking, because academics genuinely have a thirst for knowledge, for problem-solving, for deep thinking. So where do they go? What do they do? How do they translate their skills to industry? Start by identifying what you love to do, and the skills that you have. Then find an industry that needs you. It will be much more rewarding than a broken academic system.
