Millions of manufacturing jobs will open up in the United States in the next decade as workers retire. Meanwhile, the sector is expected to add jobs with help from federal subsidies. By some estimates, only half of those jobs will be filled. So where will the needed workers come from? PBS NewsHour business and economics correspondent Paul Solman visited Cincinnati State Technical and Community College in search of answers. #manufacturing #communitycolleges #training #workforce #journalism

Climate change represents an existential threat to human existence. Lumina Foundation President and CEO Jamie Merisotis said that higher education, as part of its mission, has historically worked to create large-scale change for the nation and world—so it's natural that it is one of the most central topics higher education has or will ever tackle. During the Sparking Equity podcast last month, he said that addressing it might not be as abstract as it initially seems. Higher ed leaders can do some "basic blocking and tackling" by supporting students through climate literacy and better engaging their communities. Listen to the full conversation with Waverley Street Foundation's Lande Ajose and College Futures Foundation President and CEO Eloy Oakley:

The Class of 2024 faces a challenging entry into a cooling labor market, with hiring at levels last seen during the 2009 recession. A projected 2 percent dip in job opportunities underscores the importance of persistence and strategy in job hunting. However, college degrees still yield immense long-term benefits like lifetime earnings and job security. These new grads can start building their career with intention by demonstrating adaptability and strong networking skills. That first job is a stepping stone, not a final destination, Lumina President and CEO Jamie Merisotis writes in his latest for Forbes. Read more:

The unknowns in President-elect Donald Trump’s mass deportation promises are understandably causing apprehension for some students applying for financial aid. And even though data from Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is protected from any use outside of awarding financial aid, there’s no guarantee of protection. School counselors hope students will take the risk and apply anyway.

We're inching closer to the edge of the enrollment cliff. To navigate this challenge--driven by an 18-year trend of declining birth rates---higher education must become more accessible, affordable, and supportive for potential and current students. With fewer high schoolers and more adults needing credentials, a streamlined system is vital for workforce readiness. How are you preparing for the drop?

With a projected 2 percent hiring dip this year, recent graduates are understandably concerned about how they’ll break into their desired field. But they’ll likely find themselves with an advantage: The durable skills students develop through college—like collaboration, problem-solving, and time management—are essential, employers say. “At times like these it might be worth reminding new graduates that, despite the slow start, most will see significant benefits from their college degrees over the course of their careers,” writes President and CEO of Lumina Foundation Jamie Merisotis.
