We envision a world where no child is denied the chance to learn.
About us
Our vision is of a world where no child is ever denied the chance to learn. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 9 in 10 children do not learn to read by age 10. Children who are out of primary school are uniquely challenged to develop vital foundational skills and keep up with educated peers over time. Our mission is to ensure all children have equal access to joyful, foundational learning, especially those shut out of education by crisis, poverty, or discrimination. To date, Luminos has enabled 277,787 out-of-school children to get a second chance to learn. Luminos currently operates classrooms in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East where students live in very challenging circumstances.

📚 Learning to read is essential to children’s success. Yet in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), most children struggle to read by age 10. New research by Luminos’ Neha Raheel, and Dr. Kathy Rastle and others reveals critical gaps in foundational skills like decoding words and recognizing letter sounds. Each year, these gaps widen, highlighting the urgent need for systematic phonics-focused instruction tailored to LMIC contexts. At Luminos, systematic and explicit phonics instruction is fundamental to our approach to enabling children to become confident, independent readers—a crucial ability for first-generation readers in low-resource contexts. This approach equips our students with the skills they need to flourish in government schools and beyond. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/girBupKJ

🌍 📚 Today is #WorldChildrensDay, a day to celebrate and protect every child’s right to a bright future! At Luminos, we’re dedicated to ensuring vulnerable children, like Nahom, gain access to quality education, foundational skills, and opportunities to thrive. Luminos student Nahom is one of over a million internally displaced people in Tigray, #Ethiopia. From 2020-22, conflict devastated the region and disrupted education for millions of children. Luminos classrooms provide a safe place for students like Nahom to catch up on missed education and find hope for the future. At the beginning of the Luminos program, Nahom was shy, lonely, and afraid. Today, he is a top student, actively helping his classmates and even sharing what he learns with younger children in his community. Exciting new data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) by IDinsight confirms the long-term impact of the Luminos program in #Liberia. One year after completing the program, Luminos graduates continue to achieve exceptional results, including: 📋 Durable learning gains: Luminos graduates in Liberia demonstrated remarkable progress, reading an average of 34 words per minute compared to 15 WPM for children in the control group. 📋 Higher school persistence: 75% of Luminos graduates persisted in school one year after completing the program–15 percentage points higher than their peers. 📋 Stronger socio-emotional skills progress: 73% of teachers reported that Luminos graduates demonstrated better confidence, resilience, and expressiveness compared to other students, alongside stronger reading and attendance. 🔍 Read the key findings and learn how Luminos is transforming the lives of children in Liberia: https://bit.ly/4hSmL5e #EducationForAll #Impact #AcceleratedLearning #GlobalEducation

We’re incredibly proud to see the lasting positive impact of our program in #Liberia! Remarkably, 75% of Luminos graduates persisted in school one year after our program, continuing to outperform their peers in literacy and numeracy. Thank you, IDinsight, for highlighting that it is possible to reach children at the margins of the system and enable them to succeed long-term in government schools. Full report ⬇
📣 New Report Alert! We’re thrilled to share findings from our one-year follow-up of our #RCT of the Luminos Fund’s Accelerated Learning Program for out-of-school children in Liberia! ⬇️ The Luminos program equips children who have missed years of schooling with foundational literacy and numeracy skills, empowering them to confidently enroll in mainstream schools. Previously we found that, by the end of program, children could read 4.5x as many words per minute and complete 2x as many addition and subtraction problems as the control group. https://lnkd.in/gqu2fMr6 Here’s what our new follow-up study found: 📈 Enrollment Boost: One year after graduating from the Luminos program, 75% of out-of-school children are enrolled in government or private schools— a 15 percentage points higher rate than the control group. 📖 Sustained Learning Gains: One year later, the positive difference in literacy and numeracy scores between Luminos graduates and the control group is similar to the gains seen at the first endline, showing lasting impact. 🎯Inclusive Impact: The sustained learning gains are similar across age and enrollment history. Across gender, children perform similarly on most literacy and numeracy skills. This suggests that the Luminos program generally empowers children of all backgrounds equally. 🔗 See the full report to explore these findings in detail and IDinsight's recommendations! https://lnkd.in/gmAq4j_P
