Our vision: for every child, a foundation to thrive.
About us
Mainspring Schools is on a mission to provide children and their families with a community for high-quality early education and holistic support. We are Austin's oldest preschool, and we teach children ages birth to 5 years old. Mainspring is one of only 8% of childcare programs in the nation to have earned accreditation from NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children). Since 1941, Mainspring has been eliminating the school readiness gap: when children start kindergarten behind, they are likely to stay behind for the rest of their lives. 94% of Mainspring graduates start kindergarten at or above the State of Texas’ school readiness level—over twice the regional average—meaning they are primed for better outcomes in high school graduation rates, job attainment, lifelong earnings, and overall stability. Our families come from all over the city and represent different backgrounds, ethnicities, and socio-economic levels; at all times, at least 75% of our students are eligible for tuition subsidies. Mainspring families are offered services including supplemental nutrition resources, financial education, job coaching, life skills training, peer support groups, an onsite social worker, emergency assistance, and referrals to community resources. We believe that early childhood education —alongside a two-generation approach to breaking cycles of poverty and inequity—to be critical for a flourishing society. At Mainspring Schools, we believe there is no such thing as another person’s child.

So proud of the Mainspring teachers - one of only 5 teams invited to present as part of Project Galleria at the 2024 Texas Association for the Education of Young Children Conference earlier this month! We presented about our trauma responsive teaching practices, influenced and inspired by the extensive training in #TBRI we are receiving from Nurturing Change! This team did such an excellent job preparing a visual roadmap of trauma responsive practices - but also case studies from individual classrooms that they talked about with other #earlyeducation professionals and educators. Very proud of their #growth, #curiosity, #leadership, and commitment to the #mainspringmagic of meeting each child and caregiver where they are through healthy attachment and playful engagement.

Lookee here! So great to see an article that dives into the needs of children and families around mental health support. Thank you to the Texas Tribune for publishing it - to Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, former Surgeon General of California and expert on Adverse Childhood Experiences, for her fierce advocacy and encouragement, and to United Way for Greater Austin for bringing her to visit Mainspring last month.
A few weeks ago, we had the most magical conversation in the courtyard of Mainspring Schools with the phenomenal Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, facilitated as part of United Way for Greater Austin's centennial celebration. Dr. Burke Harris was deeply impressed with Mainspring's trauma-responsive approach, which is made possible by a legacy partnership (since 1943!) with UnitedWay. A reporter and photographer team from Texas Tribune were in the courtyard with us, following Dr. Burke Harris, and were deeply invested in the issue of childhood mental health. Later that evening, as the centennial celebration's keynote speaker, Dr. Burke Harris fired up the audience about preventing and healing families who have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). She repeatedly cited Mainspring as an organization doing the work. We do this work in community with other organizations, individuals, volunteers, supporters, partners, donors, social workers, and families, and we're so grateful for the continued connections and investments that make it possible. The Texas Tribune article dropped today - and we are just delighted for its in-depth conversation around needs of children and families and how early education is an invaluable investment in a 2-gen approach to wellness. Thank you so much to Dr. Burke Harris and to the UnitedWay team for supporting programs like ours! #earlychildhoodeducation #traumainformed #community #socialwork #kindergartenready #allabilities https://lnkd.in/g-99m5fZ

Thank you, Travis County Commissioners! Unanimous vote for a public referendum this fall to support #earlyeducation!!
Mainspring Schools was founded in 1941 as a Works Progress Administration project. We understand the transformative power of public investment in infrastructure. Like roads, bridges, highways, and hospitals, the #earlyeducation eco-system connects and supports the whole community. Today, over 5000 children are on a 2-3 year waitlist for Workforce childcare subsidies, which hits low- and moderate-income families the hardest. Without affordable, accessible early education, caregivers can not go back to school or work. And children do not get critical high-quality, play-based learning environments that are foundational to success in school and life. At Mainspring, 75% of families receive subsidies; 30% live below the federal poverty guidelines; 20% are residents of public housing. On Friday, our class of Shining Stars graduate #ReadyforKindergarten. Today, we are so grateful that #TravisCounty Commissioners voted unanimously for the Travis County CARES referendum, which will fund #earlyeducation and #childcare programs like ours. #WeBuildBrains #nonprofit #publicinvestment #education https://lnkd.in/gP9QdfM2

Check out https://lnkd.in/gSDmsdWu for the opportunity to invest in children, families, and Travis County's future!
Mainspring Schools is proud to be part of the #AffordableChildCareNow! coalition convened by United Way for Greater Austin. We support equitable access to affordable, quality early education as a way to positively and significantly impact a child's future success. Mainspring does this with play-based and trauma-informed learning starting as early as 6 weeks through 5 years. Additionally, as the first school in the nation to be built within a federal housing community, we ardently believe that access to affordable childcare is essential for working families and families that want to participate in education or workforce training. Early education contributes to economic stability and growth within our community, with a $4-$16 return on every dollar invested. Tomorrow, Travis County Commissioners will consider a vote on Travis County CARES, an initiative that will help families with the rising costs of living and enable parents to earn more while their children are adequately cared for. Hope to see you at the Commissioners Court for this historic opportunity to support early education! #earlyeducation #TravisCounty #economicimpact

Every event like this makes an impact on Austin's children and families. We call it "the putt-erfly effect." Bad puns aside, this is the best kind of day, connecting with folks about the work we do in education and family services - and getting to hang out with our friends at Austin Angels! Thank you to the players, donors, teams, and organizers of this great event. #fundraising #nonprofit #golf #earlychildhoodeducation

Two years ago, Mainspring's annual report was focused on #resilience in early education and family services as we adapted to the new normal of COVID and post-pandemic systems. So we are grateful to Soul Nourishing Collective for their commitment to wellness in the Mainspring community. Stay tuned for more profiles of Fling sponsors! The Fling is only 9 days away!
