📣 Big news for the whisky world: 'American Single Malt Whisky' is now officially recognized under federal regulations. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau establishes 'American Single Malt Whisky' Standard of Identity. This is a huge step for distillers and the industry and helps set clear standards. Here’s what you need to know: - Must be 100% Made in the USA: Mashed, distilled, and aged in the U.S., all at a single distillery. - 100% Malted Barley: No exceptions. - Proof Requirements: Distilled to a proof of 160 or less and bottled at no less than 80° proof. - Barrel Aging: Aged in oak barrels (used, uncharred new, or charred new) with a max capacity of 700 liters. - Coloring Disclosure: Caramel coloring is allowed but must be noted on the label. - ‘Straight’ Labeling: Can be called 'Straight American Single Malt Whisky' if aged at least 2 years. 📅 The new standards take effect January 19, 2025, with a 5-year transition period for labels bottled before January 19, 2030, to meet prior regulations. This change comes after petitions and years of hard work by distillers and the American Single Malt Whisky Commission. It's monumental for producers looking to compete globally while celebrating a truly American product. #LiquorLawyer #Entrepreneurship #LegalServices #Law #DrinksIndustry #Regulations #AlcoholCompliance #AlcoholIndustryAdvisor #BeverageIndustry #SpiritsIndustry #AlcoholIndustry #AmericanSingleMaltWhisky #AmericanWhisky
