💡 What is the HIMO project? The History of Institutional Management & Organization project started in late 2022. It is focused on the American history of our digital capitalism, from the war to the post-war period, with a focus on new ways of working and living as they emerged from the impetus of the US politics and geopolitics of work and management. HIMO gathers researchers from Europe and the US. It combines historiography with philosophy (in particular philosophies of futurity, desire, interruptions and nothingness). HIMO is coordinated by François-Xavier de Vaujany, professor at Paris-Dauphine #HIMO #Apocalypsemanagériale #TheRiseofDigitalManagement #HistoryofManagement #DigitalCapitalism #AmericanEvent #Geopolitics #Desire #Interruptions #War #ColdWar #IndustrialMobilization #Grandchallenges #Futurity

Exploring the history and process of our digital capitalism
About us
This page gathers the community interested in the American history of our digital capitalism, its war and post-war genealogy. It is focused on historical and philosophical perspectives analyzing the desiring machines feeding contemporary processes of our societies, their apocalyptic movements continuously unveiling whats happens and what comes next. This page is related to two books published by professor François-Xavier de Vaujany: "Apocalypse managériale" (Les Belles Lettres) and "The rise of digital management" (Routledge) but also more generally, the History of Institutional Management and Organization (HIMO) he is coordinating.

🔎 A very important philosopher, and key reference for the books "Apocalypse managériale" and The rise of digital management: towards ordinary apocalypses : Günther Anders, in particular his (two volumes) book "The Outdatedness of Human Beings" or "L'obsolescence de l'homme : Sur l'âme à l'époque de la deuxième révolution industrielle" in French. More than ever, an absolute must-read to understand our time and the experiential status of apocalyptic technologies today: https://lnkd.in/eNy-H4jd #Apocalypsemanagériale #TheRiseofDigitalManagement

💪 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧'𝐬 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬 🌟 On December 8th, the U.S. entry into WWII. We take this opportunity to reflect on the monumental legacy of "𝑹𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓". When the iconic "𝐖𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐨 𝐈𝐭!" poster was unveiled, it wasn’t merely a call to arms; it became a powerful symbol of empowerment. Capturing the spirit of millions of women who stepped into factories and shipyards, Rosie shattered stereotypes and opened the door for women in management and economics. She wasn’t just flexing her muscles; she was flexing the potential of women in the workforce! 💪👩🏭 This striking image galvanized a generation, signaling that women could do more than just support from the sidelines - they could lead, innovate, and redefine industries. Rosie’s message resonated far beyond the battlefield, inspiring a movement that championed diversity, resilience, and economic strength. 📣 ❗ Today, as we reflect on her legacy, let’s acknowledge how Rosie’s story paved the way for #inclusive business practices and inspired countless women to ascend to #leadership roles. Her spirit reminds us that “𝐖𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐨 𝐈𝐭!” isn’t just a slogan; it’s a commitment to breaking barriers and driving progress in every sector. In the comments, you'll find references to scientific articles that took inspiration from 𝑹𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓, showcasing her enduring influence in economics and management. Let’s honor Rosie as we advocate for a future where women’s contributions to management and economics are recognized, celebrated, and valued! 💡 Very interesting recent conference by Lorino Philippe about American pragmatism and organization studies. Great introduction to pragmatist thought. Interesting confluences with the historical and philosophical analyses offered in "Apocalypse managériale" and The rise of digital management: towards ordinary apocalypses: https://lnkd.in/eZa7k-7d Pragmatism radically departs from the prevalent representationalism and rationalism still present in contemporary capitalism #Apocalypsemanagériale #TheRiseofDigitalManagement #Pragmatism #Representationalism #Rationalism #WilliamJames #CharlesSandersPeirce #JohnDewey François-Xavier de Vaujany Vincent Berthelot Lucie Chartouny Maximilian Heimstädt Emilie Lanciano Brendan Hogan Ioana Lupu Loïc Andrien Quentin Genissel

The world's first air defense system - Semi Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE). It was developed between 1954 and 1963, and operated until 1983, when a replacement was commissioned - the FYQ-93 system. This is practically the record for innovations in the entire history of computing - distributed computing, computer networks, modems, CRT monitors, man-machine interface in the form of light guns - without the SAGE project, this article would not have been published on the Internet, since the Internet would not be. The system monitored all air traffic within US borders in real time - over 50,000 flight paths per day - and was conceptually based entirely on Wiener's cybernetic ideas. Its creator Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider, a member of Wiener's circle and the first director of DARPA, created ARPANET in 1969, the grandfather of the Internet (photo https://lnkd.in/d98XDjgD) #TheRiseofDigitalManagement #Apocalypsemanagériale

🔎 Discover a key archive of the book: all letters writen by James Burnham in the context of his political activities of the pre-war period. Most of them can be accessed on the website marxist.com: https://lnkd.in/ebkhqmrH François-Xavier de Vaujany explored them more systematically in 2019 at the Bobst library of New York University with the Max Schachtman fund (see appendix of "Apocalypse managériale" for all references). These archives illuminate differently both the 'managerial' intuition of James Burnham (e.g. from his critique of marxist dialectic) and the reasons of his departure from the Workers Party. His exchange of letters with Leon Trotski is particularly instructive. His full letter of resignation from the party is reproduced here: https://lnkd.in/ewWRReUa #TheRiseofDigitalManagement #Apocalypsemanagériale Matthieu Kwasniuk-Zélazny Marc Kohlbry Lauri Pietinalho Labardin Pierre Didier Bensadon Sophie Agulhon Stanislas Kihm Damien RICHARD

Because this fascinating 596-page book invites you into an odd narrative experience, diving into the time of great historical momentum when American management and digitality (first called cybernetics) met. Where did they meet primarily? In the modern space of New York, in Manhattan, which appears in the book more as a core nexus of converging events that somewhat tells this story, rather than something likely to express the full truth of this encounter. One of the great ideas of the book is to give depth to this 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘮 by imagining a meeting between four protagonists, each one being a piece in the puzzle: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900–1944), French poet, airman, and author of the mythical story 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦; James Burnham (1905–1987), American philosopher and political theorist, writer of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 published in 1941; Professor Norbert Wiener (1894–1964), American mathematician and philosopher, considered the originator of cybernetics; and Margaret Mead (1901–1978), American anthropologist, key participant in the Macy conferences on cybernetics. Wiener, Saint-Exupéry, and Burnham never met in real life, but a short piece of fiction is offered in the book to explore their imaginary and plausible encounter and how this non-event could have unfolded. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paolo Quattrone, Tammar B.
