💡 What is the HIMO project? The History of Institutional Management & Organization project started in late 2022. It is focused on the American history of our digital capitalism, from the war to the post-war period, with a focus on new ways of working and living as they emerged from the impetus of the US politics and geopolitics of work and management. HIMO gathers researchers from Europe and the US. It combines historiography with philosophy (in particular philosophies of futurity, desire, interruptions and nothingness). HIMO is coordinated by François-Xavier de Vaujany, professor at Paris-Dauphine #HIMO #Apocalypsemanagériale #TheRiseofDigitalManagement #HistoryofManagement #DigitalCapitalism #AmericanEvent #Geopolitics #Desire #Interruptions #War #ColdWar #IndustrialMobilization #Grandchallenges #Futurity

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐔s 𝐒𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠? The ancient Egyptian civilization lasted for more than 3,000 years. Yet, in all that time they never progressed beyond building great monuments, while the majority of Egyptians remained poor farmers. An ancient Egyptian awakening from a thousand-year sleep would find herself in a world not too different from the one she was born in. The same would not be true for a Leonardo Davinci awakening in the 21st Century. Why did exponential progress in science and technology only begin in the 17th and 18th centuries? My view is that the institution of slavery, present since the beginning of civilization, had a lot to do with it. Slavery provided the energy needed for wealth and stability, making human labor a commodity that dampened the drive for scientific and technological progress. Human motivation was another driver. The need for power – preserving one’s wealth and the insatiable appetite for domination and exploitation – has been a driving force throughout history. Yet, something remarkable happened just a few hundred years ago. The age of exploration and the Enlightenment were driven by individuals with a high need for achievement - explorers, scientists, and thinkers who sought recognition and progress, more than they did power. This period saw a cultural shift towards valuing innovation and individual contribution, paving the way for the Industrial Revolution. Up until the 1700’s the world experienced almost no economic growth. But in Britain, John Kay invented the flying shuttle that enabled a single person to operate a weaving loom. Soon after the steam engine gained wide use, allowing production to be driven by inanimate energy, not by people or animals, lifting the world economy from 0$ to over 100 trillion today. These combined factors—the rise of Enlightenment thinking leading to the abolishment of slavery and institutions that fostered new technological innovations where entrepreneurs and scientists could thrive - created the conditions for rapid technological and economic growth. It's a reminder of how human motivation and societal structures shape our progress. And, how quickly they can stop it. What are your thoughts? We were fortunate to have Kate Raworth with us in Dublin in September and good to see an interview Niall Sargent did with her - we need economists and business/economic journalists to engage with the relationship between economics, social well-being and climate-justice and with circular models like doughnut economics. Cities including Amsterdam and Vienna have adopted doughnut economics as a transformative tool in their climate resilience and planning. We need to get beyond a narrow GDP definition of wealth and benefit (particularly if its driven by emissions intensive growth) and see the holistic, long-term cost-benefit ecosystem analysis when we make policy and planning decisions. #doughnuteconomics #wellbeing #AnTaisce
“It’s not even naïve to ignore the living world and keep focusing on economic growth – it’s profoundly dangerous”. I recently spoke with the “renegade economist” Kate Raworth about her Doughnut Economics model to shift from a market-led to a sustainable, socially just approach. A stable future, she says, depends on it. Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) https://lnkd.in/eYJHeFii

Our thanks to Niall Sargent at The Currency who spoke with Kate Raworth following her recent conferring with an honorary doctorate in economic sciences from University College Dublin. The starting point of her 'Doughnut Economics' model is to change the goal from endless GDP growth to thriving sustainably without depleting the planet. Sargent writes: 'Today, Raworth counts over 90 local and regional governments in cities across the world that are implementing doughnut economic principles into their policies. 'In April 2020, for example, the municipal government in Amsterdam approved a long-term circular economy strategy for the city based on an adapted version of the doughnut model. 'The regional assembly for the Brussels-Capital Region in Belgium has also adopted the doughnut model as the guiding framework for its climate and just transition policies. 'Last year, for example, it passed a law which outlines strict environmental and social requirements that businesses must meet to receive subsidies and support from the regional government.' #SDGsIRL #sustainability

As ALLEA celebrated 30 years of promoting '#Science as a Global Public Good' this year, we asked distinguished members of our academic community, "How can we continue to foster research collaborations while ensuring research security, particularly against the current backdrop of tectonic geopolitical shifts?" Watch the discussion centred on how to encourage and foster international #research collaborations during times of #geopoliticalcrises, while preventing the misuse of science and technology, with the participation of Yves Flückiger (President of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences), Juras Banys (President of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and ALLEA Board Member), David Harel (President of the The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities), Antonio LOPRIENO (Former ALLEA President), Mark Walport (Foreign Secretary of The Royal Society) and Pawel Rowinski (ALLEA President):
