Mara Restoration is finishing up an extensive preservation project at the Sheriff's House, located in New Castle, DE. The Sheriff's House was constructed in 1857 on the site of a circa 1793 jail. It is all that remains of Delaware's first prison system. The Sheriff’s House is the only National Park Service-owned facility in Historic New Castle and was donated to the National Park Service by the State of Delaware in 2013 as part of First State National Monument. The scope of work includes the 100% re-pointing of the exterior stone façade using traditional hand tools such as hammer and chisel, stone dutchman repairs on the exterior walls and features, repairing stone lintels, and replacing brownstone coping stones on the mezzanine. We also restored all interior fireplaces and reconstructed the hearths, widened the doorway in the first-floor main hallway for access to the original jail cells, performed various interior repairs such as brick and stone infills, installation of a crack monitoring system, and brickwork on the access ramp between the Sheriff’s House and the courthouse. The improvements will help encourage visitors to get a more in-depth, place-based visitor experience at the partner sites throughout the state. In addition, the rehabilitation will provide NPS staff office space on the second floor.

In anticipation of warmer weather and sunny skies, Mara has been busy working at Sunnybrook Golf Club in Plymouth Meeting. Our team is doing a 100% repointing of the patio that surrounds the main club house. To ensure the best possible results we have been utilizing a heated tent area to keep the masonry elements at their required temperature. We are completing the work during their "off-season" so that members and guests will be able to enjoy the views of the course once the warmer weather arrives. Stay tuned for more job pictures once the project is completed.
