I represented Mari Test with Matthew Buckley at the Oxford AI challenge semi-finals. It was a great experience and the networking session was great. I was intrigued by the amazing work that the start-ups that were present are doing.

A Journey Driven by Purpose. 💡 We’re incredibly proud to share that our founder, K., has been nominated for the EMY Africa Youth Changemaker Award 2024 by Peace First! This journey started with a deeply personal loss—Hakim’s father passed away from a heart attack due to delayed medical intervention. Determined to prevent others from suffering the same fate, he co-founded AID You, equipping over 2,000 young Ugandans with heart health education and CPR training. But his mission didn't stop there. During a school internship on Bussi Island, Hakim himself nearly lost his life to malaria due to a lack of diagnostic tools in remote areas. This close call inspired him to take bold action, leading to the creation of MariTest. Our flagship product uses AI technology to offer bloodless malaria diagnostics, enabling early detection even in underserved communities. 🌍💡 What this recognition means: This nomination is more than just an award—it’s a chance to amplify our mission to democratize healthcare services across Sub-Saharan Africa, ensuring timely and proactive care for everyone. How you can support Hakim and our mission: 👉 Vote: Take a moment to vote for Hakim Kakooza with a simple click. It’s free, secure, and takes less than 20 seconds! https://bit.ly/48f6Qt4 👉 Share: Please share this post to help us spread the word. Together, we can create a future where healthcare is proactive, accessible, and sustainable. Thank you for standing with us. 🙏

𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐟𝐮𝐥 #𝐓𝐀𝐌𝐂2024 “𝑰𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆’𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚, 𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒘𝒏”. As the literary giant Chinua Achebe remarked, the second Transforming African Med-tech Conference held last week in Nairobi showed that the continent is taking tremendous strides in writing a new story about the African medical technology industry.   Co-creating possible policy, investment and structural interventions that will create a vibrant, Africa-led med-tech marketplace; and engaging with innovators and thinkers from across the continent and drinking from the fountains of knowledge shared by great minds over 3 days were the highlights of our attendance and participation at the second Transforming African Med-tech Conference #TAMC2024. Meeting innovators from across the continent who are working to make a veritable impact on the health outcomes of all Africans was inspiring, with everyone actively sharing “war stories”, insights and “innovation hacks” to help each of us on our growth journeys. From Marrakesh to Cotonou, Nairobi to Pretoria, Yaounde to Accra, we exchanged go-to-market strategies for different territories and indeed cultural contexts, all with the aim of realising a vibrant African medical technology industry. We thank Villgro Africa, USAID, USAID's Kenya Investment Mechanism Philips Foundation, Jaza Rift Ifakara Health Institute NEST360 Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies, PATH, Kenyatta University and all the other sponsors and organisers for putting together this opportunity. And of course, a special shout out to the winners:  People's Choice Award: Mari Test Most Promising Technology Award: Kunamandla Enterprises Most User-Centric Award: Mari Test Overall Winner: NeoNest by Che Innovations

Did you know that mosquitoes are the world’s deadliest animals, responsible for over 600,000 deaths annually due to malaria alone? On this World Mosquito Day, MariTest is amplifying the fight against malaria. Our innovative, non-invasive diagnostic device, powered by AI, delivers fast and accurate results within just 5 minutes—no blood samples or lab required. As we remember those impacted by malaria, we’re also forging a future where early diagnosis and treatment are accessible to all, especially in remote and underserved areas. Let’s work together for a malaria-free world. 🌍💡 #WorldMosquitoDay #EndMalaria #MariTest #HealthcareInnovation

Last Sunday I was privileged to attend a special outreach and fundraising charity to the street children around Kampala, Uganda. Thanks to Suits and Suits for the invite . I not only attended as a humanitarian medic but as coordinator of Better world charity - Uganda. We offered medical check up for these homeless children including T.B testing, HIV , malaria 🦟 and basic treatment. We played football, ate food together on top of group focussed discussions held by Focus Mental Health . Nothing touched me so much as their lack of access to basic needs! How can we Mari Test eliminate malaria 🦟 when kids sleep in the open! they utilize a sewage channel as bathroom, toilet and source of water for washing and sadly relying on well wishers for food! I believe you and I have a role to play in changing the lives of others through provision of services or basic needs to better the world 🌍. #humanity #ZeroHunger , #zeroMalariastartswithme

In a previous post on Futurize #HealthTech, I highlighted how Kenya's solutions are predominantly CRUD-oriented (Create, Read, Update, Delete). In contrast, our neighbors in Uganda seem to excel in creating innovative physical devices as solutions. During the many hackathons I attended in the early 2010s, I saw a team from Uganda showcase an app called WinSenga. This app used a tiny microphone in a plastic horn, inspired by the Pinard horn that midwives have used for centuries to monitor fetal heart rates. Fast forward to Futurize 2023, Amuza Dhabuliwo and K. of MariTest from Uganda showcased a groundbreaking device: a non-invasive, automated, and reusable malaria diagnosis tool. This device leverages artificial intelligence and advanced sensors to deliver results in minutes, representing a significant leap in medical technology. #AIRevolution #MariTest #TechAdvancement #GameChanger #AfricaRising #AfricaAI #KenyanInnovation #UgandaInnovation Old post mentioned https://lnkd.in/dN5XPiG8

A few weeks ago, I received an email that instantly became one of the highlights of my year—a congratulatory message from Oxford University Africa Society! I am beyond thrilled to share that I was selected as a finalist for the Innovation Seed Fund, granting me the incredible opportunity to pitch my startup, Mari Test, at the prestigious Oxford Africa Conference. This experience was nothing short of extraordinary. It was not only my first trip to Europe and my dream university, University of Oxford, but also my first time presenting MariTest to a live, international audience. The room was filled with distinguished individuals, including Prof Irene Tracey, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya, and Senator Edward Sifuna. The atmosphere was electric, and the sense of anticipation was palpable. Standing before such a remarkable audience, I had the honor of pitching MariTest. I am overjoyed to announce that out of more than 250 applicants, MariTest was awarded the Best Development Project! This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team. Oh, did I tell you that this Award was handed over to me by His Excellency albertus aochamub, the Nambia Ambassador to France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Morocco. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the organizers of the Innovation Seed Fund and the Oxford Africa Conference for this incredible opportunity. A special shout-out to Maryam Nina Hardy for ensuring my stay at Oxford was truly unforgettable. Your support and hospitality made all the difference. Thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me along this journey. This achievement is just the beginning, and I am excited for what lies ahead!
