Partnering for intelligent ocean management
About us
Marine Applied Research and Exploration (MARE)'s mission is to explore and document the world’s oceans to support their conservation and management. Recognizing the lack of visual data available on deep subtidal habitats, MARE was founded in 2003 as a nonprofit, 501c3 organization to explore and document deepwater ecosystems to assist in their conservation and management. MARE works collaboratively with state and federal agencies, academic institutions, and other non-governmental organizations. To date, MARE has documented over 2,700 kilometers of seafloor off California’s coast alone—much of which had never been viewed before.

Our team is back at the office after completing the recent California Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) survey, but our work is only just beginning! Over the next few months our team of biologists will be busy extracting georeferenced habitat, fish, and invertebrate data from the video and still images collected. This georeferenced data helps inform on the density and diversity of marine life in these surveyed locations, helping to track changes in California's network of MPAs since their implementation. These photos were taken while surveying the Farallon Islands, Montara, Pillar Point, and Portuguese Ledge MPAs, but they are just a glimpse of the diversity of marine life and habitat types encountered during our 2024 survey. Including something we have never seen before: a Spanish shawl nudibranch hitching a ride on a brown rockfish's dorsal fin!

We couldn't have planned a better way to kick off our California Marine Protected Areas survey than a close-up Giant Pacific octopus encounter! Our team is still hard at work surveying the Farallon Islands Marine Protected Areas, but they were able to send some photo highlights and notes from dives earlier this week from sites in the Bodega Bay MPAs. Below is a summary of what they had to say: 1. The encounter with the Giant Pacific octopus was an unexpected treat on the first dive of our survey. Gracefully walking past the ROV, the octopus was likely on the hunt for one its favorite meals: Dungeness crab (more on those below). 2. Large krill swarms were not uncommon in these areas. While maybe not the most exciting images to look at, these krill swarms are the foundation of a healthy marine ecosystem. 3. Numerous live Dungeness crabs and lots of fresh molt piles were observed, by far the most molts we've ever seen during a survey. Given the timing of year and the one tail flap visible in the lower right corner of the image, these are all likely male Dungeness crab molts (females typically molt in spring). There are many possible reasons for why we saw more molts this year than in previous surveys, so this is just an interesting observation our team noted. #ROV #oceanconservation #deepsea #bluetechnology #marineprotectedareas #CAMPAS

In January 2023, the SEASCAPES project team conducted the third phase of their project, which involved remote operated vehicle (ROV) surveys to search for paleolandscapes in less than 120 meters (394 feet) of water off the Northern Channel Islands, California. Despite challenging weather conditions, the team was able to conduct 13 ROV dives and even discovered what represents the first known shallow-water cold seep field in the southern California region.
