George Mason University is advancing emergency response systems with the power of AI. Thanks to a nearly $1M grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) the Center for Resilient and Sustainable Communities (C-RASC), under the leadership of Geography and Geoinformation Science professor and C-RASC executive director Paul Houser, is collaborating with Fairfax County to improve 9-1-1 communication systems. This project aims to enhance training, reduce response times, and strengthen public safety through AI-driven innovation. With a focus on community engagement, it will also support outreach to underserved areas. George Mason University forensic artist Joe Mullins helped the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Cold Case Unit recreate the face of a 1973 Jane Doe through a clay facial reconstruction. Mullins, an adjunct professor in the Forensic Science Program and the School of Art, used a 3D model of the victim’s skull to craft a lifelike bust, aiding efforts to identify her and solve the decades-old case. His work, blending art with forensic science, not only supports law enforcement but also provides valuable learning experiences for students. This #FacultyFriday features, Paul Dirmeyer, who has recently been named a Distinguished University Professor at George Mason University. Dirmeyer is a leading expert in climate dynamics, focusing on the critical role of land-air interactions. His pioneering work in this field has greatly improved the predictability of weather, particularly in relation to soil moisture and its impact on rainfall. As leader of the Global Land-Atmosphere Coupling Experiment (GLACE), Dirmeyer identified “hot spots” where soil moisture is key to predicting summer rainfall. His work shows that accurate moisture estimates improve both rainfall and air temperature forecasts—crucial for farmers, water managers, and scientists. With over 200 papers, 25,000+ citations, and an h-index of 79, Dirmeyer’s contributions to climate science are vast. His leadership continues to shape the future of weather and seasonal predictions. George Mason University researchers are conducting a groundbreaking social network analysis of organizations committed to environmental and climate justice. Environmental Science and Policy assistant professor Ted Chen, along with College of Education and Human Development - George Mason University faculty members Sammie Powers, Hung-Ling Liu, and Ellen B. Drogin Rodgers, received $300K from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to map these networks, helping identify key partnerships for advancing climate adaptation and conservation. Their work will inform both national and regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers. Learn more about their research: https://lnkd.in/gQfruD69 #ClimateJustice #EnvironmentalJustice #MasonScience

The College of Science celebrates the first graduates of our AI-enhanced Histotechnologist Certification Program. 🌟 Offered in partnership with Inova Health Systems, this unique 10-month program is the only one in the U.S. to combine digital and molecular pathology in its curriculum. All four graduates passed the ASCP board exam, with three George Mason University students among them. Led by George Mason alumnus Nicholas Hoo-Fatt and Biology Professor Anne Verhoeven, students learned cutting-edge techniques, including AI-based cancer diagnosis tools, reducing diagnosis time to as little as 24 hours. Applications for the 2025-26 program are open until Feb 7, 2025. Read more about the program: https://lnkd.in/eWGeRid4 #MasonScience #Pathology #AI #Healthcare #Inova #Histology #FutureLeaders

As we gather this Thanksgiving, #MasonScience extends heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated faculty, staff, and students. 💚💛 We would also like to take this time to acknowledge the land George Mason University occupies. At the place George Mason University occupies, we give greetings and thanksgivings to these Potomac River life sources, to the Doeg ancestors, who Virginia annihilated in violent campaigns while ripping their lands apart with the brutal system of African American enslavement, to the recognized Virginia tribes who have lovingly stewarded these lands for millennia including the Rappahannock, Pamunkey, Upper Mattaponi, Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Nansemond, Monacan, Mattaponi, Patawomeck, and Nottaway, past, present, and future, and to the Piscataway tribes, who have lived on both sides of the river from time immemorial. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/e6STXHnE

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we highlight an amazing act of kindness from our #MasonScience community! Back in September during ScienceConnect, students, faculty, and staff handmade blankets to be donated to three local shelters. 🧶 Last month, our Office of Academic and Student Affairs graciously presented the blankets to a representative from one of the local shelters. 🌟 This generosity reminds us what this season is all about—community, care, and giving back. Remember to spread warmth and kindness this season. 💚💛 #MasonScience #MasonGives #SpiritOfGiving #CommunityImpact
