Digital innovation in action: supporting the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme 🏠🇺🇦
When the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) was tasked with responding to the Ukraine crisis in 2022, digital teams played a crucial role in delivering an efficient and compassionate service at scale.
In just 6 days, MHCLG Digital launched a service on GOV.UK to connect UK residents volunteering their homes with Ukrainians seeking refuge.
The response was incredible — over 100,000 registrations in the first 24 hours!
Key digital contributions:
💡 Rapid deployment of a registration service to meet urgent needs
💡 Integration of data across government and local partners to enable safeguarding and ensure funding accountability
💡 User research to improve the service, including creating a rematching feature for evolving needs
This collaborative effort, led by user-centered design and digital ways of working, has:
✅ Issued 194,500 visas and relocated 159,400 people (as of Dec 2024)
✅ Demonstrated how agile, innovative government services can rise to meet a global crisis
This case study is a testament to how digital principles — starting with user needs, adapting to change, and working collaboratively — enable impactful, scalable solutions.
