About us
MICROBES-4-CLIMATE (M4C) aims to deepen the comprehension of the complex relationships among microorganisms, plants, and soil within the framework of Climate Change. By offering access to advanced Research Infrastructures (RIs), training, and assistance, the project seeks to encourage research tackling the multifaceted challenges presented by Climate Change to terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystems. By exploring these interactions, M4C strives to advance the understanding and facilitate the applied research directed at enhancing the resilience of plants and crops to the effects of Climate Change, thereby promoting sustainable and resilient agricultural methods. The MICROBES-4-CLIMATE project will last for 5 years (2024-2029) and it is coordinated by the Microbial Resource Research Infrastructure, MIRRI-ERIC. Its expertise joins forces from 31 partners from 13 countries in a collaboration between top universities and research centres, including with non-profit organizations and private sector entities.

That’s a Wrap! 😊 The MICROBES-4-CLIMATE Ethics and Regulatory Workshop concluded, and we would like to take a moment to reflect on the insightful takes we got from it. Firstly, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all the speakers and participants for their invaluable contributions, fruitful discussions, and exceptional engagement over the two days. 🎥 Here’s a recap: On the first day, we had a deep dive into Ethics in Microbiome Research, guided by: ➡️ Lene Lange (ll bioeconomy research advisory, Denmark) sharing insights on ethical considerations in the bioeconomy. ➡️ Stephanie Laurel Schnorr (University of Vienna) discussing ethical implications in microbiome research. Participants engaged in breakout sessions to discuss current ethical practices in research and culture collections, identifying critical gaps and needs to improve ethical approaches. Tanja Kostic (AIT) led the synthesis of these discussions, outlining actionable next steps and strategies to engage key stakeholders moving forward. On day 2 we transitioned into the regulatory aspects kicked- off by Matthew Ryan (CABI) and Celia Soares (Micoteca da Universidade do Minho - MUM). Session 1 | Best Practice, Biosecurity, and Patents ➡️ Expert Anthony Kermode (CABI) shared insights on current biosecurity practices. ➡️ Ursula Hunger (Austrian Patent Office) led discussions on the intersection of patents and microbiome research. Participants engaged in group discussions and shared feedback in a plenary session to explore innovative solutions. Session 2 | Regulation, ABS & Nagoya Featuring three insightful talks from: 🔵 Amber Hartman Scholz, Ph.D. (Leibniz Institute DSMZ – German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures) discussing the HORIZON EUROPE MICROBE PROJECT. 🔵 Keith Matthews (International Phytobiomes Alliance) on environmental regulations. 🔵 Djamila (Djami) Djeddour (CABI) presenting a real-world use case. 🗝️Takeaways: The workshop highlighted the importance of bridging ethical and regulatory practices in microbiome research, setting the foundation for future collaborations and impactful advancements. #M4C #Microbes4Climate #ResearchforClimate #M4CHorizoneurope #ResearchInfrastructure #HEU #STI #INFRASERV #ClimateAction
