The final rules for the 45V Clean Hydrogen Production Tax Credit are expected to be published before the Biden administration leaves office, and while the program has the potential to accelerate the energy transition, it has major problems that need addressing. In a two-part thought leadership series, MiQ Director of Policy Ben Webster argues that the rules: 🔵fail to acknowledge investments in emissions reductions; 🔵disincentivize emissions reductions; 🔵could result in increased upstream emissions. The future must be powered by 100% clean energy. Our mission is to reduce harm from methane emissions until we get there
About us
MiQ is an independent, not-for-profit partnership between Rocky Mountain Institute and SYSTEMIQ aiming to bring about a rapid reduction in methane emissions in the oil and gas sector. We aim to abate almost 6 billion tonnes of CO2e in methane emissions by 2030. Definitely the largest and lowest hanging fruit when it comes to fighting climate change. We have a designed a certification system which, adopted at scale, will create a differentiated market for natural gas and, therefore, different price levels. This system will incentivize the sector to invest in technology to make the significant methane reductions necessary to support the achievement of global climate targets.

“Being willing is not enough; we must do.” Leonardo da Vinci embodied action over words. In the oil and gas sector, the same sentiment must be carried forward – pledges alone are insufficient; urgent action must be taken to reduce methane emissions. MiQ independently certifies the methane emissions of natural gas production, taking knowledge into action. Check out MiQ’s latest blog, written by our CEO, Georges Tijbosch, and Head of Public Affairs, Sunny Uberoi, about the need to adopt da Vinci’s wisdom when it comes to driving down methane emissions. MiQ welcomes the U.S.-EU collaboration on methane emissions standards as a vital step for ensuring clarity and trust in the global LNG market. As the global leader in emissions certification, MiQ remains committed to providing transparent and credible solutions to help LNG suppliers meet evolving EU requirements. Clear standards and strong emissions accountability aren’t just good policy—they’re essential for driving innovation, competitiveness, and a sustainable energy future. https://lnkd.in/eWagWDE8 #MiQ #Methane #LNG

The MiQ team is out and about this week, making the case for independent, third-party certification in driving down emissions in the oil and gas sector. Michael Rabbani is at Methane Mitigation Summit Series in Houston while Ben Webster was at the North American Gas Forum in Washington. Michael and Ben are delighted to speak with so many of you at these events. #MiQ #Methane

Everything we've seen in the last 12 months suggests that European natural gas importers want assured LNG supply from the US combined with emissions transparency - not one or the other. Lifting the moratorium on LNG export permits will not change that. The key is helping importers to obtain the credible data on emissions that they need to choose lower emissions gas, and we know there is sufficient supply of verified low methane natural gas in the U.S. to meet European demand because we have certified 20% of total gas production. https://lnkd.in/eTPGSmU4

Demand for emissions transparency is only going to increase regardless of who’s in charge, so the oil and gas sector shouldn’t wait when it comes to reducing their emissions. MiQ Certification is a market-based solution that incentivises action on emissions by providing the data needed for buyers to make informed decisions on the gas they're purchasing. It was great to be at Hart Energy's DUG Appalachia Conference and Expo making this argument. https://lnkd.in/egTfQNSp #MiQ #methane

Reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector is ‘low-hanging fruit’ of the climate crisis. However, we must ensure that claims made by companies on emissions are credible, and we can only do that with independent verification by third-party auditors who are experts in emissions management. We know how to reduce oil and gas methane emissions, and we have the means to do it – but only a combination of market forces and government intervention will accelerate emissions reductions, not empty pledges. https://lnkd.in/ek63RzaJ #MiQ #Methane

The Methane Abatement Partnership Roadmap calls for coordinated global action on methane emissions—and rightly so—but too many countries and companies are waiting for the perfect conditions to act. The reality is that the tools and frameworks to reduce methane emissions already exist. MiQ is proof that immediate, significant reductions can be achieved today. Why wait until 2030 to meet the targets when we can meet some of the overall targets in 2025? The narrative that we need more time, or better technology is no longer valid. There are dozens of highly capable methane monitoring technology companies with amazing drones, lasers, and satellites, operational every second everywhere. MiQ’s certification is operational now, providing the transparency, accountability, and data accuracy the Roadmap calls for. We must stop treating methane reduction as a problem for the future—it is an urgent issue that demands immediate action. #MiQ #Methane
