BREAKING: Yesterday, the Department of Energy (DOE) released an analysis, which will provide a framework for evaluating new and pending permits for exporting liquified natural gas (LNG) to countries without a free trade agreement with the United States. The DOE found that expansion and continued use of LNG exports are unsustainable and unadvisable. “This report should end the discussion: LNG exports are bad for our pocketbooks, bad for the air we breathe, and bad for the safety of our communities. Energy independence does not mean shipping America’s resources overseas, it means harnessing and storing our abundant solar and wind energy. Clean Air Council urges the DOE to apply the study’s findings and deny the six pending permits for LNG export facilities,” said Alex Bomstein, Clean Air Council Executive Director. DOE has made clear that LNG exports are bad for everyone but the fracking industry itself. Now it's time to end the proposals for new LNG export terminals.

Circuit ruling to push for more NEPA reviews The City of Port Isabel and others are claiming that a Tuesday ruling that tossed out federal authorization for a gas expansion project in the Northeast bolsters their claims that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission should decide whether two Texas LNG export facilities and a gas pipeline will lead to a “significant” increase in planet-warming emissions. The request could test the limits of the court’s finding that FERC needed to conduct broader climate reviews. Small, new UK gas fields can have 15x LOWER INCREMENTAL EMISSIONS than the LNG the UK currently imports from the USA, according to formal UK public documents (e.g. Pegasus West and Platypus historical EIA's). UK = 5 kgCO2/boe vs LNG = 79 kgCO2/boe. The "4x lower emissions" many people use is dominated by existing UK oil production which is not relevant when considering new UK gas fields (which we must consider to reduce global emissions and increase UK control of gas supply)

I don't think a week goes past at the moment where we don't get a question about emissions comparisons for domestic supply v imported. This commonly used graphic is from the NSTA and only accounts for gas and only for CO2, not the rest of the greenhouse gases, so while very useful it's certainly not the whole picture. Gas produced by the UK releases less carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air than most other sources of gas it imports from other countries. When the UK imports gas from abroad, especially from ships carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG), it is much worse for the environment: gas from LNG produces almost four times more CO2 than UK domestic gas.
