Quick ask for anyone connected with humanitarian, charity, or other organizations—or individuals—with ties to Afghanistan. We’re (GiveInternet.org) collaborating with the MIT Emerging Talent (formerly MIT ReACT) Program to provide students from 12 countries with laptops, enabling them to participate in MIT’s remote educational program. Right now, we need help supporting two learners in Afghanistan. We’re looking for an individual or international organization operating in Afghanistan that can help facilitate this. Both students can travel to Kabul if needed. If you have relevant contacts or know of any organization or individual that can assist, please reach out. Any leads would be greatly appreciated! Meet Sujood Eldouma: a determined learner who forged her own path from Sudan to Egypt to England. When civil war forced Eldouma to leave her home and her job, MIT Open Learning's online resources equipped her with the skills and confidence to pursue a career in data science. Growing up in Omdurman, Sudan, Eldouma's passion for STEM inspired her to study electrical engineering at the University of Khartoum. There, she discovered MIT OpenCourseWare's free educational resources, which helped boost her studies. "We started watching the videos and reading the materials, and it made our lives easier,” says Eldouma. After graduating, getting her first job, and relocating to Egypt, Eldouma discovered the MIT Emerging Talent (formerly MIT ReACT) Certificate in Data and Computer Science. This program offers experiential learning, professional skill-building, and networking opportunities for refugees and underserved populations. Eldouma found herself surrounded by a supportive community and rekindled her love of learning. But she didn't stop there. Now she's working through the MITx Courses MicroMasters program in Statistics & Data Science and her master's at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Moving forward, Eldouma hopes to contribute solutions for conflicts in Sudan and beyond. Her story is a testament to the power of education and resilience. December 18 is International Migrants Day. It’s a day to step back and reflect on one of the biggest global challenges we face—displacement and migration. But for us at MIT Emerging Talent, this isn’t just today. It’s every day. Millions of people are forced to leave everything behind: home, careers, family, education. Yet, for so many, learning becomes a way to move forward, no matter where they are. Today, we’re spotlighting Sujood Eldouma, a Sudanese learner whose journey spans continents. From Sudan to Egypt and now to the London School of Economics, Sujood is pursuing her dream of becoming a data scientist. Along the way, she found support through MIT Open Learning programs like MIT OpenCourseWare, MIT Emerging Talent (an initiative of MIT Jameel World Education Lab) and MITx MicroMasters® Programs. "I see how technology is affecting people's lives, and it was my main motivation to pursue computer science. Now that I've learned all this for free, how can I give back to my community? That’s when I came up with the idea of creating an online platform where students from Afghanistan can learn about programming and computer science in Persian." Lotfullah Andishmand grew up in a rural village in Afghanistan with no internet access or electric lights. He recalls using moonlight to find his way to his uncle's house for chemistry tutoring. Motivated by a desire for better educational opportunities, he eventually moved to Kabul, where he discovered MIT OpenCourseWare’s lecture videos while studying electrical engineering at university. Later, he moved to India, where he earned the MIT Emerging Talent (formerly MIT ReACT) Certificate in Computer and Data Science through online study. In the latest of the edition of the Migration Summit, we focused on driving concrete, tangible actions around the theme Unlocking and Engaging Talent: Pathways for Dignified Work for displaced communities worldwide. Co-hosted by MIT Emerging Talent, Na'amal and Karam Foundation and a global Organizing Committee, the summit featured events and communication campaigns that highlighted the often-underestimated talent and potential within displaced communities. After being forced to flee his home country as a teenager, Admir Masic discovered his passion for chemistry at a refugee camp in Croatia. "Chemistry really forcefully entered my life," says Masic, now an associate professor at MIT Civil and Environmental Engineering. His dedication to the subject became his "magic," which later inspired him to provide educational opportunities to other students displaced by war. Masic founded MIT Emerging Talent (formerly MIT ReACT) seven years ago. The program provides computer and data science education programs for refugees and displaced communities. Thousands of refugees now apply to the program annually. Graduates have gone on to successful careers at places like Microsoft and Meta. “It’s really a life-changing experience for them,” Masic says. “It’s an amazing opportunity for MIT to nurture talented refugees around the world through this simple certification program.
