"Studying literature is inherently a good thing. Virginia Woolf, who was mortified by her father’s unwillingness to let her go to university, saw books as a way of transcending the self. . . Courses should challenge students, emphasising the decoding of texts over superficial skimming." #humanities #liberalarts #highered

To celebrate the remarkable work of MLA members, we’re launching a new member spotlight series, asking MLA members to share how MLA programs have had an impact on their teaching, scholarship, or advocacy. For our first member spotlight, we’re highlighting Anna Mills. Read about Anna’s experience as a member of the MLA-CCCC Joint Task Force on Writing and AI: “The MLA-CCCC Joint Task Force on Writing and AI has meant a great deal to me. We have shared resources in blog posts, surveyed members, led webinars, made a public statement to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, developed a community collection of teaching reflections related to AI, wrote two extensive working papers, and developed a third in collaboration with related professional organizations. I have appreciated other members’ willingness to listen to each other when we disagree and to stay open to the comments we receive.” Recommended MLA resource: The MLA Style Center’s page “How do I cite generative AI in MLA style?” The page provides concrete guidance based on general principles of MLA citation. At the same time, it invites comment and frames the question of how we should refer to AI-generated text as an evolving one where we can exercise our judgment. https://lnkd.in/eXCd7sMy

"At the heart of the Employing Humanities initiative is a commitment to experiential learning. By connecting students to both academic research and off-campus internships, the program bridges the gap between the classroom and real-world applications. The internships and research positions allow students to apply the knowledge and skills they've gained in their courses to tangible, impactful work in their communities." #humanities #liberalarts #highered

"But if reading whole books and writing essays is no longer a given, then those who can will have an edge over their peers. And if more students can be persuaded that’s a good way to become more employable, a reasonable proportion of them will go on to study English literature. . ." #humanities #liberalarts #highered #careeradvice

"Similarly, Professor Ridgely said the benefits of humanities classes — such as stronger reading and writing abilities — are essential regardless of one’s occupation. The humanities also encourage creativity, which is heavily desired in most industries, Ridgely said." #humanities #liberalarts #highered
