We've been collaborating with Dr. Mitra Naseh for over a year on refugee health initiatives with Afghan women, and we're excited to start work on a more in-depth partnership with support from the Missouri Foundation for Health. Road trips, anyone?

Building Community, Transforming Lives
About us
Monarch Immigrant Services is a not-for-profit 501 (C) (3) organization established in May, 2002 by stateless refugee women. Bilingual International was founded as a response to the unmet needs of foreign-born seniors who had limited ability in the English language, were unable to navigate the intricate system of care, and often voiced fear over their future and livelihood. In 2005, the agency began serving US-born older adults, who, despite knowledge of English, lacked knowledge of the system of care and resources. Poverty stricken, isolated seniors who were also home bound and frail sought our services to help them improve their living situations, overcome anxieties, and increase their ability to maintain community living. In 2016, Monarch Immigrant Services welcomed two long-time partner agencies: the Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma and the Places for People Faith Team. These recent additions have enhanced the agency’s service portfolio – especially to refugees and survivors of state-sanctioned torture. Free of negative bias, we advocate for and encourage legislation that promotes statewide accessible, appropriate health and social services for under-served individuals and populations. Through our services and proven track record, we not only live our mission – we go beyond expectations to help our elderly and foreign-born communities.

A busy weekend for our SASIC Afghan Services team as we hosted Dr. Omar Reda for a series of presentations and workshops at area mosques and the Afghan Community Center. Two sermons, a parenting skills-building workshop, a men's/veterans group, and work with Afghan teen groups (boys and girls consecutively) all focused on faith-forward wellness and healing. Thank you to Imam Hafeez for hosting Saturday's large event and meal at Masjid Abu Bakr Al Siddiq-STL, Kabul Express STL for the catering, and Mufti Asif and Brother Adil for the opportunity to address the Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis at Friday prayers. Project leadership heard Dr. Reda present at an Office of Refugee Resettlement conference in DC in April and invited him to St. Louis to work with the resettled Afghan community. We were shocked when he agreed. We are sincerely grateful for his visit and helping us move the needle on community mental health in St. Louis.

We are honored to welcome trauma expert and author Dr. Omar Reda to St. Louis for a weekend of workshops and family strengthening activities with our resettled Afghan community. Dr. Reda brings lived experience as a refugee, clinical experience as a psychiatrist and trauma treatment expert (under Dr. Richard Mollica at Harvard), and has advised the UN and WHO on engaging Muslim communities through faith-informed approaches to mental health. A second speaking engagement at the Islamic Foundation is being added (1:30pm) on 10/11 to accommodate additional attendees. Dr. Reda will spend the remainder of the weekend working with our Afghan Services (SASIC) team and interfacing directly with the community.

September 1st marked one year in our new building! After a decade at our Macklind office and a year of successful growth and hiring, Monarch needed more space to accommodate our expanding team. We found our new home in The Grove which comes with great restaurant options and an amazing veiw from the 7th floor! It’s incredible to think that we moved buildings and rebranded our agency within just seven months of each other. Here’s to a fantastic year two in our new building!
