SUMAÚMA Jornalismo, based in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, is amplifying voices for Amazonian conservation. Sumaúma's director Eliane Brum was voted Prospect's Top Thinker for 2025, chosen from a shortlist of 25 experts on climate, economics, freedom, geo-politics and technology. Brum is passionate about "bringing the forest as a participant in the conversation." She co-founded Sumaúma to report on the Amazon from the inside, and to train as journalists "young people from the forest, like Indigenous and other traditional communities, and also urban young people from the cities of the Amazon, the peripheries, the slums." Please join us in congratulating Eliane Brum! 👏 👏 Our Andes-Amazon Initiative is dedicated to promoting conservation and sustainable development by working with and supporting partners, such as Sumaúma, that are working towards the long-term ecological integrity and climatic function of the Amazon basin. ➡️ Read the full article to learn why Prospect readers chose the Brazilian journalist as their Top Thinker for 2025: https://lnkd.in/gSSVRCMK Avecita Chicchon Maria DiGiano Francisco J.B. The enormity of devastation from the Los Angeles wildfires underscores the urgent need for solutions to combat and prevent wildfires on a global scale. As part of the XPRIZE Wildfire competition, 47 teams are currently developing technologies aimed at transforming how we detect and respond to wildfires–preventing the kind of destruction we’re witnessing today. These innovations represent hope for a future where communities and ecosystems are safeguarded against the devastating impacts of destructive wildfires. 💡 If you feel you have ideas to contribute to solutions, please fill out this form. https://lnkd.in/g8eWnrJt For more information on XPRIZE Wildfire, to donate to the prize, or sign-up for our newsletter, visit here. https://lnkd.in/gfXbt6ch XPRIZE remains steadfastly committed to identifying solutions to end destructive wildfires. #LAWildfires #CaliforniaWildfires #XPRIZEWildfire

🌿California Academy of Sciences has received additional support to continue digitizing their vast botany collections. Digitizing these collections will harness scientific data and mobilize diverse communities to fight climate change, stop biodiversity loss and advocate for nature. The new funding will help CalAcademy researchers digitize their full herbarium, totaling 2.3 million botany specimens from around the world! 🌼 “We are excited to see the Academy continue to digitize their expansive collections of plant specimens from across the globe. This digitization, and the enduring work history of botanical research at the Academy, will help us gain a better understanding of biodiversity now and into the future.” - Heather L., program associate for the Curiosity-Driven Science Initiative 🏵️ Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gpk3esjg #sciencemuseums #naturalhistorymuseums #sciencephilanthropy #sfbayarea #communityscience Images courtesy of the California Academy of Sciences

Congratulation to Professor Vicky Kaspi and the McGill University Radio Transients group for their work in tracing a fast radio burst to the outskirts of an ancient, dead, elliptical galaxy — an unprecedented home for a phenomenon previously associated with much younger galaxies. ☄️ This first time discovery shatters assumptions that fast radio bursts solely emanate from regions of active star formation. The new observational evidence, instead, hints that the origins of these mysterious cosmic events might be more diverse than previously thought. 📓 A Repeating Fast Radio Burst Source in the Outskirts of a Quiescent Galaxy #openaccess.
