Dear MBR community, ⭐ for the last time in 2024, we would like to highlight an insightful and interesting paper recently published in our wonderful journal - it may just be the perfect read before Christmas and the holiday season! ⭐ In their paper entitled "A typology of born global firms’ attributes and future directions", Dr Huda Khan and S. Tamer Cavusgil apply a frame-based approach, a relatively under-applied methodology in the international business (IB) literature, to develop a multi-dimensional typology of BGFs’ attributes. Full paper available here: https://lnkd.in/dQ87ZjzZ 🎄 ✨ Finally, we wish all our readers, editors and reviewers a merry Christmas/ holiday season and happy new year! We will try to go through the papers as quickly as possible during the festive season, but everyone will also try to recharge during the Christmas period, thank you for your patience and support. Interested in reading early cite papers? Here's a recent one: "Indirect corporate political strategy in cross-border acquisitions: influence of political affinity on target-dependent firm lobbying" by Dinesh Hasija, Mirzokhidjon Abdurakhmonov, Lee Warren Brown, Ru-Shiun Liou. https://lnkd.in/genPXER9 🌍🏛️ Navigating Legitimacy Challenges Through Strategic Partnerships 🌐🤝 A fascinating new study explores how multinational enterprises (MNEs) from countries with low political affinity with the United States and its allies navigate complex political and regulatory landscapes. By leveraging strategic partnerships, particularly through friendly acquisitions, these MNEs mitigate legitimacy concerns and enhance their corporate political activities (CPA). Key Insights: Indirect and Collective Lobbying: The research highlights how MNEs facing heightened legitimacy challenges strategically use acquired firms to access valuable lobbying resources. This indirect CPA approach helps them manage the political dynamics in the host country effectively. Impact of Political Affinity: Firms originating from countries with low bilateral or multilateral political affinity with the host nation are more likely to adopt these strategies. The study demonstrates how multilateral political relationships further influence the effectiveness of these approaches. Evolving Corporate-Political Dynamics: The findings provide a nuanced understanding of how global political shifts and increased scrutiny on corporate-political interactions are shaping indirect CPA strategies. Based on an analysis of 2,173 friendly acquisitions in the US by MNEs from 66 countries, this research sheds light on the strategic importance of partnerships in managing political risks and maintaining legitimacy in complex international markets. For businesses operating globally, these insights emphasize the critical role of strategic acquisitions in navigating challenging political environments and fostering sustainable operations. What strategies have you observed or implemented to address legitimacy concerns in international markets? Join the discussion! #CorporatePoliticalActivities #InternationalBusiness #GlobalStrategy #MNEs #PoliticalRisk Dinesh Hasija Lee Warren Brown Ru-Shiun Liou, Ph.D.

Dear MBR community, happy Friday! Still looking for a good read for the weekend? Why not check out the article by Sushma Kumari, Vikrant Shirodkar and Steven McGuire entitled "The impact of home institutions on the internationalization of emerging market SMEs: a systematic review". 💡 #SMEs represent 99% of all firms across countries, including #emerging markets, the #EU and #OECD, so understanding how these firms' #internationalization is impacted by their home institutions is of economic importance and interest amongst scholars, policymakers and managers alike. ➡️ This paper follows a systematic procedure to review 58 selected articles on how institutional contexts in emerging economies impact SME internationalization, covering studies from 1999 to 2023. ➡️ The article shows that emerging market SMEs’ internationalization knowledge is strongly shaped by home-country institutional conditions. Key #mechanisms include imprinting by home institutions and learning from domestic institutional sources, both critical yet underexplored areas in SME development. Want to know more? ⏰ NEW PAPER ALERT ⏰ We recently posted about the publication of our latest issue (Volume 32, Issue 4). One of the articles included is the paper by João Bento and Miguel Torres entitled "Towards #environmental impact of inward foreign direct #investment: the moderating role of varieties of #democracy". 💡 Purpose: This study examines the influence of types of democracy on the relationship between inward FDI and carbon intensity. 📊 Methods: This study applies the fixed-effects panel quantile regression approach that considers unobserved heterogeneity and distributional heterogeneity using panel data from 160 countries during 1990–2020. 🖊️ Findings: The results show that FDI has a significantly negative impact on carbon intensity of the host country in the upper quantiles. In general, different types of democracy have a significant positive impact on carbon intensity across different quantiles. After considering the other factors, including industry intensity, trade openness, green technology, fossil fuel dependency and International Environmental Agreements, there is evidence that all types of democracy moderate the relationship between FDI and carbon intensity.
