This postcard of Times Square at night transports us back to a pivotal era in New York City's history. During the 1920s and 1930s, Times Square became the vibrant epicenter of entertainment, commerce, and culture. Known as "The Great White Way," the area was illuminated by the glow of electric signs and neon advertisements, symbolizing the city’s rapid modernization. Originally named Longacre Square, the area was renamed in 1904 when The New York Times moved its headquarters there. By the time this postcard was created, Times Square had become a hub for theaters, movie palaces, and lavish hotels, reflecting the architecture of the Art Deco period. Advertisements for Chevrolet, Planters Peanuts, and Coca-Cola highlighted the growing consumer culture of the time, while the electrified signage cemented Times Square's reputation as a center of spectacle. This postcard is just one of the many ways that postcards helped popularize and memorialize the landmarks of Art Deco New York. To learn more about how these small works of art captured the essence of an era, visit "Art Deco City: New York Postcards from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection," now on view at the Museum of the City of New York. _ Times Square at Night, Published in New York City by Acacia Card Company, c. 1950, Leonard A. Lauder Postcard Archive.
