  • The year 2023/24 marked a significant milestone for us! We are a co-operative dedicated to working toward regenerative change through collaborative projects. With a network of over 50 members spanning diverse fields, mostly in southern Africa but growing to other regions, we are emerging as an influential driving force for positive impact. Our co-operative structure is unique as it aims to empower members to actively participate in the daily operations and growth of the organisation. While cooperatives have traditionally been agricultural enterprises, we have been experimenting with a #decentralised structure that allows members to contribute their skills, ideas, and expertise to the space. This model nurtures a sense of ownership and shared responsibility, also enabling members to contribute to a wide range of projects. Throughout 2023 and 2024, Mycelium has undertaken numerous initiatives that have left a lasting impact on communities and ecosystems. From producing captivating documentaries to facilitating creative and innovative workshops, these projects have showcased the versatility and creativity of the network's members. We invite you to read our 2023/24 Impact Report that provides a comprehensive overview of Mycelium's accomplishments and highlights the collective efforts of its members. It showcases the organisation's commitment to regenerative practices, social justice, and environmental sustainability. As Mycelium Media Colab continues to grow and evolve, it remains dedicated to its mission of inspiring and empowering individuals to create a more sustainable and equitable future 🦾

  • Happy holidays! As the holiday season arrives, we invite you to take a step back. We know that for many of you, the pursuit of making a difference toward a sustainable, just, and positive future is unrelenting. In the spirit of regeneration — not just for the planet, but for ourselves — we hope this time serves as a gentle reminder to care for your mind, body, and spirit. You are a critical part of the collective transformation we are striving for, but you cannot pour from an empty cup. Your health, both physical and emotional, is integral to the ongoing work of healing the earth and uplifting communities. As multimedia creatives, activists, and changemakers, you are constantly in motion — creating, advocating, building, and envisioning new futures. But rest is a radical act of renewal. Whether it’s through quiet moments of solitude, reconnecting with nature, or indulging in creative activities that nourish you, take this time to center your own well-being. Rest is not only a break from the work but a form of regeneration that fuels the next phase of our shared journey. At Mycelium Media Colab, we’ve learned that sustainability is holistic — it embraces the nurturing of both the earth and its stewards. And as creatives, we know that our best ideas often emerge when we give ourselves permission to rest and reimagine. Therefore, we hope this holiday season brings you moments of peace, rest, and creative renewal. With warmth and gratitude, Mycelium Media Colab #RestIsRevolutionary #WellnessForChangemakers #MyceliumMediaColab

  • "The Rain in Spain", is an insightful piece written by Network member Melanie Farrell In a beautiful reflection, she connects her childhood memories with a rescue dog—one who, despite the boundless joy of life, was terrified of the sea. Her story is more than just a memory; it’s a heartfelt #meditation on fear, #resilience, and the ways we #connect to the world around us. Melanie expresses a deep empathy for #Valencia, Spain that has recently affected by natural disasters, weaving a compelling narrative that brings attention to the urgent need for action in response to our planet's changing climate. • At the end-of-year Mycelium Media Colab mixer, Sean Mac Pherson celebrated her work as a primary puppet and set designer for Puppet Planet with us! 🎉🎭 Sean is creating puppets from the ancient oceans in a fascinating project in which Mac Fabulous Creation is collaborating with Paleontologist Dr. Wendy Taylor of Puppet Planet for the 2oceansaquarium schools program. Dr. Wendy Taylor works closely with staff and researchers at Iziko Natural History Museum to create educational, captivating experiences for audiences. • There is so much we are #grateful for in 2024, including the growth of the Mycelium Media Colab Network that began in 2018. Since then, this network of changemakers, regenerators, and #multimedia creatives has expanded, weaving a tapestry of collaboration, inspiration, and innovation🌍. As we approached the end of the year, it became clear that we needed a space to celebrate the incredible strides we've made, both individually and collectively. And so, our end-of-year mixer was born—a gathering that brought together the #MyceliumNetwork. Members shared stories of their journeys, their challenges, and the breakthroughs that have shaped their work. 🎉 We celebrated with Claire Rousell on her work on Community Art Mobilisation Project (CAMP), a toolkit for #climateaction, in partnership with the New Economy Hub. CAMP uses basic tools of artists and cultural workers to shift toward positive action. 🎉 We also celebrated with the dynamic duo, Sean and Angela Mac Pherson, creative forces blending art, nature, and #sustainablepractices. Angela leads #KURUfynbos, a FynbosLIFE project, which builds small groups of people through research, design, construction of sculptures that represent endangered animal and insect species that inhabit the veld type represented in each specific FynbosLIFE veld circle. 🎉 Sean's work with Puppet Planet, founded by associate professor Dr. Wendy Taylor at Iziko Natural History Museum, brings science to life through the enchanting medium of theatre and puppetry. Thank you to our Network for being part of this incredible journey—here’s to many more years of growth, connection, and creativity! And if you're reading this and feeling inspired by the work and energy of Mycelium Media Colab, we invite you to join our collaborative community. • Two months ago, we asked our followers, "What do you imagine a future without coal could look like?" This question was inspired by Mycelium Co-op member Lara Taylor's collaboration with the African Climate Alliance #cancelcoal campaign. Two days ago, we celebrated a historic moment for South Africa. The Gauteng High Court has delivered a landmark judgment in one of the country's first #youthled climate litigation cases. ⚖️ The judgment states, amongst other things, that there had been no consideration of how the decision to erect a power plant would impact the rights of children under section 24 and 28 of the South Africa's #Constitution. As a result, the constitutional challenge was upheld. 🎉 We extend a big congratulations to groundWork, African Climate Alliance, and Vukani Environmental Justice Movement represented by the Centre for Environmental Rights for their exceptional work on this groundbreaking case. This victory signals a new era in our environmental #regeneration movement. As quoted in the recent Daily Maverick newspaper, "The Cancel Coal case could reshape the country’s stance on energy mix and legal accountability." We believe this is just the beginning. It's a powerful statement that challenges future exploitative actions, not only in the #energy sector but also in areas like #mining, #agriculture, and #infrastructure development. So, we want to know, where were you when you heard the news? 👉 read the full coverage here https://lnkd.in/dUA5KB7R

📣 We have made history – new coal has been cancelled in court! 👩⚖️ This victorious moment marks the first time in South African history that youth have led a climate change court case against the government. 🌍 Three years ago, the Cancel Coal court case was opened against the South African government to fight for our futures. The applicants included African Climate Allaince, groundWork and the Vukani Environmental Movement, represented by the Centre for Environmental Rights. Yesterday, we got the news that we won. ⚖️ In a landmark ruling, the High Court of South Africa has overturned the government’s plans to add 1,500 MW of new coal-fired power to the national grid. The court found that the government failed to adequately consider the impact of coal on children’s rights, particularly their right to a healthy environment, saying they are “unlawful and invalid”. 🇿🇦 It’s not only young people that will benefit from an end to new coal. This is a victory for all South Africans as it writes into law the importance of considering environmental and health impacts in government decision-making. ➡️ Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dafrmCaq #CancelCoal

We had the privilege of doing a walk-through the incredible Busiswe Mgangxela, food and forest farm in Eastern Cape. Busiswe is the founder of Embo Yakwanthu NPO and someone actively engaging with #agriculturepolicy in the Eastern Cape. During the walk-through, Busiswe shared her wealth of knowledge with participants from Isithembiso Multipurpose Organisation, a registered NPO founded in 2018, based in Ncera near East London in the Eastern Cape. Our co-host Mycelium Media Colab also offered participants mobile videography training and a podcasting session that introduced them  to the key elements of storytelling. Some of the notable outcomes from the day included: 💡 By bringing together participants from Isithembiso, we fostered valuable connections and shared knowledge. During the walkthrough, attendees had the chance to network with experts and fellow enthusiasts, sparking new ideas and collaborations. 💡 Podcasting can be a powerful tool for sharing knowledge and stories 💡 Participants focused on using sound as a medium and layering narrative with music and sound effects using CapCut to create engaging podcasts and short radio stories in isiXhosa with a smartphone. Make sure to follow Isithembiso's Facebook page to see how they will carry these ideas through in their different initiatives aimed at uplifting the community https://lnkd.in/dGTdQMwt #storytelling #agroforestry #myceliummediacolab
