Rebuilds communities in crisis and advocates for survivors of sexual violence. Founder: Nobel Laureate Nadia Murad

About us

Nadia’s Initiative is dedicated to rebuilding communities in crisis and advocating globally for survivors of sexual violence. Nadia’s Initiative’s current work is focused on the sustainable re-development of the Yazidi homeland in Sinjar, Iraq, where Nadia grew up. When ISIS launched their genocidal campaign, they not only killed and kidnapped Yazidis, but also destroyed the Yazidi homeland to ensure the community could never return. Nadia’s Initiative works with the local community and a variety of implementing partners on the ground in Sinjar to design and support projects that promote the restoration of education, healthcare, livelihoods, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), and women’s empowerment in the region. All Nadia’s Initiative programs are community-driven, survivor centric, and work to promote long term peace-building. Nadia’s Initiative advocates governments and international organizations to support efforts to rebuild Sinjar, seek justice for Yazidis, improve security in the region, and support survivors of sexual violence worldwide.

Updates

  • Nadia's Initiative remains committed to the project of hope for survivors of genocide and conflict-related sexual violence around the world. Rebuilding communities post-conflict is just one aspect of seeking justice for minorities impacted by violence. The resilience of the Yazidi community is proof that homelands can be rebuilt, survivors can find safe return after genocide, and hope is alive. More of this in 2025 ⭐

  • Last year, Nadia's Initiative opened the NI Women's Center. The first of its kind in the region, the center will provide holistic support to empower women and girls and to help survivors rebuild their lives. It doesn't stop there. Through 6 projects in 2024 benefiting over 2,000 women and girls, from livelihood support, to sports empowerment, to collective reparations, NI continues to advance women's empowerment in Sinjar and beyond. #WomensEmpowerment #GenderEquality

  • Nadia's Initiative is working to preserve Yazidi cultural sites and traditions through the rehabilitation of temples, construction of memorials, and opening of cemeteries to honor those who were killed during ISIS' genocide and lay the groundwork for restoration and peacebuilding. In the aftermath of the genocide, these sites represent just one form of justice which Yazidis and other minority communities in Iraq deserve. #CulturalPreservation #Memorialization #JusticeForSurvivors

  • At Nadia's Initiative, 2024 was a year dedicated to empowering women and girls through a variety of projects developed with them in mind. The NI Women's Center opened and began its pilot programs and the Women's Sports Complex was alive with play, competition, and growth. All Sinjar returnees, though, benefited from the projects completed this year with the goal of seeking justice, rebuilding the Yazidi homeland, and helping survivors heal.

  • Nadia Murad led NI’s advocacy for survivors all over the world this year. As conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) is on the rise worldwide, it is more important than ever to listen to survivors who are brave enough to share their stories and fight for justice. 📽️ Watch the full video below to learn more.

  • This year, Nadia's Initiative completed 2 projects to boost the livelihoods of survivors returning to Sinjar. The projects will serve nearly 1,500 beneficiaries. Follow along to see additional project updates in 2025 as we press on with this important work.

  • As 2024 comes to an end, we are incredibly grateful for your support of our mission. Nadia's Initiative made important progress this year: supporting survivors at our new Women’s Center; commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide; supporting the development of children and youth in Sinjar; freeing women and girls in ISIS captivity; and holding perpetrators of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) accountable for their crimes. Sadly, conflict and #CRSV are on the rise worldwide, and survivors and communities in crisis will face even greater challenges in the coming months. Can you make a gift to Nadia’s Initiative before the year ends to expand our survivor-centric programs and advocacy in 2025? nadia.la/donate
