Rebuilds communities in crisis and advocates for survivors of sexual violence. Founder: Nobel Laureate Nadia Murad

About us

Nadia’s Initiative is dedicated to rebuilding communities in crisis and advocating globally for survivors of sexual violence. Nadia’s Initiative’s current work is focused on the sustainable re-development of the Yazidi homeland in Sinjar, Iraq, where Nadia grew up. When ISIS launched their genocidal campaign, they not only killed and kidnapped Yazidis, but also destroyed the Yazidi homeland to ensure the community could never return. Nadia’s Initiative works with the local community and a variety of implementing partners on the ground in Sinjar to design and support projects that promote the restoration of education, healthcare, livelihoods, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), and women’s empowerment in the region. All Nadia’s Initiative programs are community-driven, survivor centric, and work to promote long term peace-building. Nadia’s Initiative advocates governments and international organizations to support efforts to rebuild Sinjar, seek justice for Yazidis, improve security in the region, and support survivors of sexual violence worldwide.

  • As 2024 comes to an end, we are incredibly grateful for your support of our mission. Nadia's Initiative made important progress this year: supporting survivors at our new Women’s Center; commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide; supporting the development of children and youth in Sinjar; freeing women and girls in ISIS captivity; and holding perpetrators of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) accountable for their crimes. Sadly, conflict and #CRSV are on the rise worldwide, and survivors and communities in crisis will face even greater challenges in the coming months. Can you make a gift to Nadia’s Initiative before the year ends to expand our survivor-centric programs and advocacy in 2025? nadia.la/donate

  • Education is key to transforming ideas, creating opportunities, and reimagining futures. Access to learning not only opens doors to job opportunities but also provides children with the skills to stand up for their rights and make change in their communities. However, in Sinjar, years of neglect and conflict have left schools in disrepair, with crumbling infrastructure, a critical shortage of teachers, and students learning in unsafe environments. By reconstructing and furnishing primary, middle, and secondary schools, providing school supplies, and investing in early childhood and post-secondary education, NI is laying the groundwork for a brighter future in Sinjar. #EmpowerChildren #Education #NadiasInitiative

  • On Genocide Prevention Day, Nadia's Initiative honors victims and calls for action. The 2014 genocide against the Yazidis serves as a reminder that the impact of genocide is not confined to a single moment. Survivors face ongoing challenges: displacement, destroyed infrastructure, and the absence of justice. With over 2,000 Yazidis still missing, it is crucial to prioritize rescue efforts, rebuilding communities, and ensuring accountability for those who committed these atrocities. Justice and prevention go hand in hand. By addressing the roots of violence, systemic discrimination, and persecution of marginalized groups, we can prevent the crime of genocide everywhere and empower survivors to rebuild their lives across the globe. #GenocidePreventionDay #NeverAgain #YazidiGenocide #JusticeForSurvivors
