🌌 Fellowship Highlight: Malia Barker’s Cosmic Research on Tidally Decaying Exoplanets 🔭 Malia Barker, a PhD student in Computing with a focus on Data Science at Boise State University, is combining her passion for astrophysics and computational techniques to explore the mysteries of exoplanets. 🌠 "Currently, I collaborate with Dr. Brian Jackson, studying ultra-hot Jupiters—exoplanets that orbit extremely close to their host stars and gradually spiral inward toward destruction," Malia explains. "I’m developing a software package that enables astronomers to analyze exoplanet observations and calculate the likelihood of planets migrating toward their stars. This tool helps astronomers identify and prioritize the most promising candidates for further study." Her project, "Doomed Worlds—A Tool for Detecting Tidally Decaying Exoplanets," is helping astronomers focus their efforts to capture one of the rarest and most spectacular cosmic events. 🚀 Idaho Space Grant Consortium continues to be amazed by the work of our Fellows. The Institute of Competition Sciences (ICS) has launched a new pilot program and Idaho is one of the few states supporting teams. "Help NASA learn to build on the Moon! 🌕 Can your students help determine how to use lunar regolith to create concrete and build structures on the surface of the Moon? In this challenge, you will get hands-on with a lunar regolith simulant engineered in the lab to mimic the properties found on the Moon. A Program Guide walks students through a series of activities to learn about the properties of lunar regolith, develop a concrete mixture using regolith, test your concretes strength, and use what you have learned to design a lunar habitat for future long-duration missions to the surface of the Moon!" 🔗For full details and to register visit https://lnkd.in/gaPPUj2E #InstituteofCompetitionSciences #BuildtheMoonChallenge #MiddleSchoolEducation #HighSchoolEducation #STEMchallenge

🛰️ Internship Highlight: Karina Zikan’s Research on Greenland Ice Retreat ❄️ Karina Zikan, a Geophysics major at Boise State University, spent her summer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center developing innovative methods to map ice retreat on the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). 🌍 "Over the summer, I developed a workflow for mapping land-terminating ice on the GrIS using machine learning algorithms," Karina shared. "By the end, I had classified the entire margin for 2019 and 2023, identifying areas of retreat. I also gained expertise in image classification using Google Earth Engine and Jupyter Notebooks." Her work is helping to advance our understanding of climate change impacts on Greenland’s ice.
