Throughout my NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) fellowship, I've been asked how to craft a successful NPP proposal. As I transition out of the NPP into my new role, I wanted to share some key insights that helped me secure my fellowship: 1️⃣ Connect with a NASA civil servant: Building a relationship with your potential adviser early is crucial. Explore current NPP opportunities at https://lnkd.in/gWS7BgHd and reach out to advisers with a brief intro and interest in developing a proposal with them. Consider conducting a small literature review before contacting them or early on, and provide potential topics based on your findings to kickstart the conversation. 2️⃣ Tailor your proposal to align closely with NASA’s satellite missions: It’s not just about answering a science question but showcasing how your work supports NASA's missions. For those in the Earth science field, also tailor this to the NASA Earth Science to Action strategy (https://lnkd.in/g3YPnRRW). It’s important to show how your research will leverage NASA’s satellite data to address key societal challenges, as outlined in their strategic missions. 3️⃣ Use key language: Incorporate exact keywords from the NPP job posting throughout your application—proposal, CV, everything! 💡 Start your research with these resources: - General NPP info: https://lnkd.in/gHTCN4Zc - Application tips: https://lnkd.in/gdpTDEPi Additionally, I found some helpful videos on YouTube: - https://lnkd.in/gg-bs7Wd - https://lnkd.in/g-kR9nZi I hope these tips can help you through a successful NPP application journey! 🌟 #NASA #NPPFellowship #Research #EarthScience #CareerTips #SpaceScience #ScienceCommunication

I recently wrote about FGCU’s involvement in the #NASADEVELOP program for #FGCU360, highlighting a unique opportunity for Florida Gulf Coast University students to gain hands-on experience in tackling #environmental challenges. It got me thinking about the key takeaways that apply not just to students, but to anyone looking to grow professionally. Here are three pieces of advice I’d like to share from that story: 1.) Collaboration is a powerful tool. The FGCU team worked with the #Seminole Tribe and NASA scientists, proving that interdisciplinary partnerships can spark innovative solutions. 2.) Seize opportunities. Learning new skills — like the coding and geospatial analysis two #FGCU students picked up while working with #NASA — helps you grow. 3.) Leverage every chance to network. The participants gained valuable connections with professionals in their field, something that can lead to future opportunities and professional growth. Whether you're a student or deep into your career — collaborate boldly, seize every learning opportunity, and build networks that pave the way for future success. 📑 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/ebWmBtGW 🚀 Thanks to Kenton Ross and Charlie Hatfield at NASA, and Rachel Rotz, Nathan Hewitt and Gustavo Rosas at FGCU for talking to me for this story, and to my colleague James Greco for the great photos. #CareerGrowth #NASADevelop #ProfessionalDevelopment

From the Young Professionals strand at the Space Education Summit, here's Mariam Naseem's session moderated by Gitika Gorthi, including a very global Q & A with discussion of opportunities for schools... and planetary science! 🚀 https://lnkd.in/gQT4D5ci "The Young Professional's Guide to the Galaxy This session will cover tips and resources for current and aspiring young professionals seeking to chart their own unique paths in the aerospace sector. It will draw on Mariam's lessons and experiences from her own non-traditional background as a minority and immigrant from Pakistan, who has worked on oil rigs in Russia, conducted research in the Arctic, and other adventures which ultimately led her to finding her place in aerospace. Now, she conducts astrobiology research with NASA to aid the search for life on icy ocean worlds in our outer solar system. Ultimately, the key for searching beyond, lies within! Mariam Naseem is a Polar & Planetary Science Researcher and Ph.D. student at the University of Maryland, College Park where she investigates geological processes on icy ocean worlds like Europa and Enceladus through terrestrial analogs in polar environments on Earth. Prior to commencing her Ph.D., Mariam worked with the Industry Relations team at the Canadian Space Agency to support Canadian space companies with business development engagements. Mariam has also served as a Research Fellow at the Open Lunar Foundation contributing to an open communication architecture for the Moon, and as a policy researcher at Arizona State University’s Space Governance Lab, analyzing technologies and policies with a focus on emerging space nations." 🚨🚨 NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate is seeking subject matter experts to serve as #peerreviewers of proposals submitted to the recently released NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (#NIAC) Phase I solicitation (https://lnkd.in/edi_6kct). These panels are generally three-day in-person reviews. Travel support is provided. Eligible reviewers will also receive a nominal honorarium. The NIAC Program focuses on #earlystage feasibility studies of #visionary concepts that address national government and commercial #aerospace goals. Concepts are solicited from any field of study that offers a radically different approach or disruptive #innovation that may significantly enhance or enable new human or robotic science and exploration missions. If you are interested in serving as a peer reviewer for the NIAC Phase I solicitation, please fill out the following form: https://lnkd.in/ePkrR_Eg You can also access the form from the NSPIRES homepage under Site News. If your skills match NASA needs for the review and considerations for any organizational conflicts of interest allow, we will contact you to discuss further steps. Participating in a review is a service to the community and can be informative for those who might like to propose to STMD in the future. Note: A similar volunteer opportunity will be available for the upcoming NASA Space Tech Graduate Research Opportunities fellowships program as well. So stay tuned to register as a reviewer for those early career researcher proposals. Both NSTRGO and NIAC span the technical scope of NASA's mission so there is plenty of opportunity for involvement by a variety of technical expertise. #innovation #review #peerreview

NASA has created a brief video to serve as an introduction to NGSTRO25, a fellowship opportunity for Fall 2025, focused on graduate student research and development of advanced and innovative space technologies: https://lnkd.in/ghi5cvJp The 2025 NASA Space Technology Graduate Research Opportunities (NSTGRO25) solicitation was released as an Appendix to the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) NASA Research Announcement, titled Space Technology Research, Development, Demonstration, and Infusion 2025 (SpaceTech-REDDI-2025). This opportunity, starting at the beginning of the 2025 academic year, will provide up to four years of support for doctoral students, with funding up to $84,000 per year. The NSTGRO25 grant will provide a $40,000 annual stipend, as well as support for tuition, health insurance, and conference attendance. The grant also provides support for onsite research experiences at NASA Centers across the country, and recipients will collaborate with leading NASA experts in space technology to acquire a more detailed understanding of the potential end applications of their space technology efforts and directly disseminate their research results within the NASA community and beyond. To date, over 700 awards have been made to students attending over 110 universities across 42 states and one U.S. territory. NASA expects to make a similar number of NSTGRO25 awards to prior recent solicitation cycles, which have ranged from 50 to 66 new grant awards. Current and prospective doctoral and master’s students should see the NSTGRO25 solicitation for full eligibility requirements. In most cases, proposals must be submitted directly by an accredited U.S. university. The proposal deadline is November 1, 2024 (6 PM Eastern, 3 PM Pacific). More information can be found at: https://lnkd.in/giA4Z6iK
