TAKE ACTION NOW: The Trump Administration is expected to terminate half of all employees at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), making it significantly harder for states and communities to access the federal housing, community development, and homelessness investments they need to address their most pressing challenges. About us
The National Alliance to End Homelessness is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization whose sole purpose is to end homelessness in the United States. We use research and data to find solutions to homelessness; we work with federal and local partners to create a solid base of policy and resources that support those solutions; and then we help communities implement them. Our strength is that we are an outcome-driven organization. Starting with our name and continuing with how we choose the work we do, allocate staff time, and use our resources, we focus on one thing: ending homelessness. The Homelessness Research Institute at the National Alliance to End Homelessness works to end homelessness by building and disseminating knowledge that drives policy change.

The Alliance celebrates #BlackHistoryMonth this February, but Black history is a part of our work all year round. Black homeless services providers, system leaders, advocates, peers, and frontline staff all work to end homelessness across the country, in communities big and small. We recognize and celebrate Black legacies that have often been overlooked, or contributions that have been erased. The work of ending homelessness wouldn't happen without the contributions of Black people throughout the country, in the past and at present. Happy Black History Month!

Laws that criminalize homelessness only worsen the crisis: they increase arrests, create barriers to housing and services, and cause lasting harm to the people they target. A new series of briefs from the Alliance’s Homelessness Research Institute summarizes the conclusions of nearly 100 studies on the topic. Advocates, policymakers, and everyday Americans should use this research to push back on local efforts to criminalize homelessness, and inform effective and humane solutions instead: https://lnkd.in/gGySEhSw

“You’re already fining somebody who’s in an extremely vulnerable position who’s not going to be able to pay that fine,” said Chelsea Haring-Cozzi of CHIP - Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention. "If the fine gets paid, likely it’s going to be paid by a nonprofit partner. And that takes funding away from the actual services and housing solutions we need to be investing in.” https://lnkd.in/eTS58Uya

"The old maxim of measuring a society by how it treats its most vulnerable people is as true today as ever; by that measure, we fail. And whether or not you are sympathetic to the millions of people experiencing homelessness every year, you need to know who they are."
