About us
The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) is a membership organization that develops, supports, and empowers citizen leaders on state boards of education to strengthen public education systems so students of all backgrounds and circumstances are prepared to succeed in school, work, and life. A nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, NASBE elevates state board members’ voices in national and state policymaking, facilitates the exchange of informed ideas, and supports members in advancing equity and excellence in public education. For more than 60 years, NASBE has been the only organization focused solely on these boards. NASBE keeps boards apprised of the latest research evidence to support their policymaking, shares initiatives and lessons learned from other states, and gives them the tools and technical assistance they need to create the conditions for equity and excellence in their states. Through conferences, publications, webinars, trainings, and other convenings, NASBE builds members’ capacity to effectively set state policy, convene stakeholders, and ask questions.

We are thrilled to introduce two advisory councils for NASBE’s High School Transformation State Network! The first is made up of experts from Advance CTE, Aurora Institute, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Education Commission of the States, Education Resource Strategies, Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, GRAD Partnership, Learning Policy Institute, EdTrust, Mastery Transcript Consortium® (MTC), National Association for College Admission Counseling, Southern Regional Education Board, Teach Plus and XQ Institute, among others, to support us with project goals, share insights and relevant research, and facilitate connections across the state network. Students are also advising the Network. Our Student Advisory Council includes a passionate group of student state board members from across the country dedicated to transforming the high school experience for all learners. We’re so excited to bring these organizations—and students—together and learn from them! Our postelection analysis is out! While the 2024 federal elections brought significant change, voters at the state level opted for stability, with no shifts in partisan control of state boards. The report highlights key takeaways from elections that decided 64 state board seats across nine states, three territories, and D.C. NASBE’s Abigail Potts, Joseph Hedger, and Naomi Porter, authors of the report, note: “While partisan control of state education leadership saw minimal changes, state education leadership will continue to face scrutiny. Politics, rather than partisanship, may have a bigger impact on the 2025 education policy landscape, as elected leaders shift from campaigning to governing.” Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eY_MU9Ev

Most state boards of education share a common responsibility: the approval of academic content standards—that is, defining what students should know and be able to do. When aligned with a state’s economic, civic, and cultural goals, high-quality standards help prepare students for greater success in postsecondary learning, work, and civic life. Our new analysis outlines guiding principles and common processes to help state boards develop high-quality standards. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eeshKC34

Ensuring that data is used in support of students is an equal obligation that goes hand in hand with mitigating privacy concerns. But siloed data gets in the way of stakeholders being able to use critical information to support students. Paige Kowalski’s recent article for the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) discusses why state education boards should champion laws that codify cross-agency data governance to promote interagency collaboration and ensure accountability for data quality, privacy, and security. https://lnkd.in/g8GQytue
