Data from NCARB's 2024 annual data report shows an increase in both the number of newly licensed architects and the total number of U.S. architects! As NCARB works to reduce unnecessary licensure impediments and improve accessibility, we hope to see these changes reflected in attrition rates and licensure statistics in the years to come. We recently caught up with some members of 📍the nycoba | NOMA (NY Coalition of Black Architects|National Organization of Minority Architects - NY) chapter, an organization working to ensure that all licensure candidates have access to the opportunities they need to complete the AXP and advance their career. By developing an innovative OnSite program, candidates have regular access to Construction & Evaluation experience—an area that many candidates have difficulty with—through supervised site visits. When architect Samantha Josaphat earned her license in 2017, she became the 397th Black woman in the United States to reach that milestone. At the time, there were over 109,000 architects practicing in the U.S. Today, Black women still make up less than half a percent of licensed architects. Samantha went on to found her own firm, STUDIO 397 Architecture PLLC, commemorating her place in history and calling attention to architecture’s ongoing representation gap.
