you’ve probably heard me say: #healthiswealth. unfortunately, it goes the other way, too. let’s articulate how *anyone of us* can fall prey to the circular trap of #medicaldebt: -your health (or that of a loved one, if you’re a #caretaker) may take a dramatic turn impacting your income and overall capacity for just “keeping up”. -you may not be able to pay that one #medicalbill (or perhaps one you’re fighting due to inaccurate billing), or simply lose sight due to being overwhelmed with your health. -it ends up in collections (an often nasty industry to work with), plumutting your #creditscore for *years* to come, and thus impacting your ability to secure quality financing, #homeownership options, etc., and likely pushing you further into a #mentalhealth spiral, which in turn impacts your physical health. #socialdeterminantsofhealth, anyone? -If you’re fortunate, you seek help from Clarifi or another trusted National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC)…but too often, the downward spiral continues. so #kudos to my beloved Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for this new ruling, and to #funders like #MackenzieScott (via Lever for Change) who are investing in #solutions like Undue Medical Debt as another tactic. you never know, these efforts could end up protecting you and/or someone you love in the near future. John McNamara @ CFPB Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia
Today, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau finalized a rule that will remove an estimated $49 billion in medical bills remaining on the credit reports of about 15 million Americans. https://lnkd.in/edVVycnA
